Fort Myers , FL (3/14/07) – Sophomore shortstop
JENNIFER JIMENEZ ( Linden, NJ/ Linden) homered and drove in five runs while junior righthander
CAROLYN MCCREA ( Wharton, NJ/ Jefferson Township) picked up victories in both games as Montclair State posted a pair of shutouts at the Gene Cusic Classic on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Hawks improved to 6-2 on the new season as they edged Illinois College, 1-0 before powering past Ohio Wesleyan, 12-0.
Jimenez provided the only hit of the game for Montclair State against Illinois College, but it proved to be the difference as she doubled with one out in the fourth inning to drive in the game's lone run.
JACKIE FERRANTI ( Bergenfield, NJ/ Bergenfield) walked to open the inning and
MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) sacrificed Ferranti to second. Jimenez then doubled home Ferranti for the 1-0 lead.
McCrea (3-2) made the lead hold up as she allowed just five hits striking out two and walking none. Illinois College managed to get just one baserunner to second, which came in the first inning as losing pitcher Sarah Holloway singled with one out and moved up a base on a passed ball. However, McCrea fanned the next hitter to end Illinois College's best scoring threat of the game.
After managing just one run in the first game, the Red Hawks put up 12 as they recorded their third shutout of the year in the 12-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan.
Montclair got a run in the first as
AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY/Clarkstown North) drove in Ferranti from third with an infield single. The Red Hawks then exploded for nine runs in the third helped out by three Ohio Wesleyan errors. Jimenez had an RBI single and Livsey also drove in a run before
MEGAN TANTUM (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) added two RBI to give Montclair a 5-0 lead.
KELLY KARP ( Edison, NJ/Edison) and
MEGAN DURKIN ( West Orange, NJ/ West Orange) also drove in a run apiece and Jimenez' second run batted in during the inning made it 10-0.
Jimenez would account for the final two Montclair runs in the fifth with her first round-tripper of the year, a two-run shot.
McCrea was the beneficiary of the run support as she improved to 4-2 on the season. The righthander allowed just one hit and struck out two in four innings before senior righthander
DANA WARNOCK ( Kearny, NJ/ Kearny) pitched a scoreless fifth inning to close out the game.
Livsey and Jimenez each collected two hits in the game while Ferranti was 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
The Red Hawks conclude their 10-game schedule in the Gene Cusic Classic on Thursday, March 15 as they take on Albion College at 9:00 pm before battling New England College at 11:00 am.
