BRIANNA GILLIN (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored five goals while senior
ANN DAILY (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and junior
NICOLE ROSELLE (Montville, NJ/Pine Brook) each added three as top-seeded and 15th-ranked Montclair State scored seven consecutive goals in the second half and knocked off No. 4 seed Manhattanville, 18-8 in the semifinals of the Skyline Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Senior
SHAUNA BROCKLEBANK (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) added two goals and two assists as the defending champion Red Hawks moved to 12-3 on the season in reaching the championship game for the second straight year. MSU will face either No. 2 seed Stevens or No. 3 seed Mount St. Vincent on Saturday, May 5 or Sunday, May 6 at a time to be determined.
Katie Bertel (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) and Kelly McMurray (Brewster, NY/Brewster) had two goals apiece for Manhattanville, which finished its season at 7-10. The Valiants also lost to the Red Hawks for the second time in five days as it fell 20-8 in the final conference game for both teams on April 27.
Montclair State jumped out to an early lead this one a 5-0 cushion as Gillin scored with 26:09 left in the opening period. Brocklebank notched her first goals two minutes later and Gillin followed 13 seconds after that as MSU led 3-0 with 24:14 left.
BETHANY BLAINE (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) gave Montclair a four-goal advantage before Gillin capped off the game-opening run with her third as MSU led by five.
Amber Winslow (Averill Park, NY) got the Valiants on the board with 16:26 to go and McMurray finished off an assist from Abbe Grimes (Hamden, CT/Hopkins) as Manhattanville cut the lead to 5-2. Daily, Brocklebank and Roselle each scored to boost the Red Hawks' lead back to 8-2 inside the 10-minute mark, however Cory Alcorn (Orangeville, Ontario/Orangeville) and McMurray countered twice in an 18-second span as the MSU lead was trimmed back to 8-4. MORGAN MACPHEE (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) and Grimes each tallied a goal before half as Montclair State led 9-5 at the break.
In the second half, Roselle and Daily scored 43 second apart with Roselle netting her third of the game with 23:18 left as MSU widened its lead to 12-5. Daily registered her third with 21:39 left and Gillin got her fourth a minute later as Montclair increased its lead to nine.
JENNIFER TANIS (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson) and
MARYKATE DIBENEDETTO (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) finished off the run as Montclair State led 16-5 with 17:01 to go.
Blaine finished with two goals and an assist while DiBenedetto and MacPhee each had a goal and two assists. Tanis added a goal and assist along with three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) made seven saves for the Red Hawks.
Grimes finished with a goal and two assists while Alcorn had one goal, one assist and four draw controls. Freshman netminder Mary Albano (Trumbull, CT) had a solid game with 13 saves for the Valiants, who were outshot in the game, 40-20
Montclair State also held a 19-18 edge in ground balls in the second and the Red Hawks won 16 draws compared to 12 by the Valiants.
