EVAN WEHMEYER (Succasunna, NJ/Pope John XXIII) scored with 26 seconds into the second overtime period as Montclair State snapped its three-game losing streak with a 14-13 victory over Dominican College (NY) in an NCAA inter-divisional men's lacrosse match at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

JOHN DELLA PESCA (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) finished with four goals as the Red Hawks closed out their regular season at 10-6. MSU will now wait to see if it is selected to the ECAC Division III Metro Tournament, which begins next Saturday, May 12. Montclair has won the ECAC crown in three of the past four seasons.
Freshman attack Alex Jones (St. Albert, AB/Bellrose) had a game-high six goals an added two assists for the Chargers, who battled back from five-goal deficit in the second half. The Chargers finished the year at 5-9.
Deadlocked at 13-13 through the first overtime period, Montclair State's
JOHN SCHIAVONE (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) won his ninth face off the game giving the Red Hawks the possession. After moving the ball around , Wehmeyer took a pass from up top and moved several steps to his right before letting go of a shot that beat Dominican goalkeeper Joe Assante (Weston, NY/Pine Bush) to the far corner of the goal.
Both teams had their chances in the first four-minute OT. Montclair nearly won the game 18 seconds in as
BRYAN KLIMCHAK (Clark, NJ/AL Johnson) uncorked a shot that bounced off the crossbar. The Chargers would gain possession on a turnover, but Owen Smith III (Cornwall, NY/Don Bosco Prep) had two shots blocked while Joe Cobis (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) and Remo Montalbano (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) misfired on their attempts.
Della Pesca's fourth goal 47 seconds into the fourth quarter gave Montclair State a 13-10 lead. But the Chargers would come back as Smith scored twice, the first coming with 12:55 and the second with just over 10 minutes left as Dominican trimmed the lead to 13-12. Smith then fed Jones for the latter's sixth goal with 7:57 left to tie the game for the fourth time. Montclair State would get three chances to capture the game in regulation, but shots by A.J. Bachman (Montville, NJ/Mountain Lakes) and
TAYLOR BONNER (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) were wide and Assante stopped Della Pesca'a attempt with two second left.
In the first half, Jones gave Dominican a 5-4 lead with 11:53 left, but Montclair State would score the final five goals to take a 9-5 advantage into halftime. Della Pesca and Klimchak each scored on man-advantage situations and Della Pesca's second of the half with 4:36 left off a Klimchak assist gave the Red Hawks the four-goal cushion. Klimchak would extend the lead to 10-5 early in the third quarter, but the Chargers came storming back as Jones began a five-goal run that was capped off by Jeremy Arcaro (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) marker with 4:05 left tying the score at 10-10.
Assante finished with 12 saves for the Chargers while
THOMAS BOWERS (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII) stopped 12 shots for Montclair State.
The Red Hawks outshot the Chargers, 44-39 with Dominican holding a 29-23 edge in ground balls while also taking 16 of the 30 face-offs. Schiavone was 9-of-17 on face-offs with six ground balls while Micah Brown (Flanders, NY/Riverhead) was 15-of-27 with 10 ground balls in the game.
