No. 15 Women's Lacrosse Captures Second Straight Skyline Championship

Montclair, NJ (5/6/07) – Senior attack BRIANNA GILLIN (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored once and assisted on seven other goals as top-seeded and 15 th-ranked Montclair State captured it second consecutive Skyline Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship with a 13-6 victory over second-seeded Stevens at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.

SHAUNA BROCKLEBANK (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) and BETHANY BLAINE (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) each had three goals as the Red Hawks moved to 12-3 and will now wait to see if they are selected as a Pool B team to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship which gets underway on Wednesday, May 9. The Skyline Conference does not have an automatic bid and Pool B is for teams from conference that do not merit and automatic bid and independent squads.

Alyssa Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) and Kara Borzillo (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) each had two goals for Stevens (11-7), which had their six-game winning streak snapped in falling to MSU for the second time this season. The Ducks lost 18-7 to Montclair at Sprague Field on April 4.

Montclair State jumped out ot a 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. ANN DAILY (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) put the Red Hawks on the board 1:17 into the contest and JENNIFER TANIS (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson) had an unassisted tally with 22:46 left before Blaine scored 21 seconds later as MSU held a three-goal lead.

But Stevens responded with a four-goal spurt as Pigott scored the first goal with 16:02 left and tied the game with 13:27 to go. Katie Lalli ( Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) gave the Ducks the lead with an unassisted goal as Stevens moved in front 4-3 with 5:10 remaining before half. Montclair State countered with the final two goals both set up by Gillin. Brocklebank tied the game with 3:51 to play and NICOLE ROSELLE ( Montville , NJ /Pine Brook) gave Montclair the lead at 1:45 to go as MSU led 5-4 at the break.

In the second half, Blaine and Borzillo traded goals in the first five minutes of the half before the Red Hawks pulled away with a six-goal run over the next 13 minutes. Gillin sparked the run with an unassisted goal with 22:49 remaining. Stevens nearly got one back as a shot by Borzillo appeared to tuck in underneath the crossbar. However, play continued and Montclair capitalized moments later as MARYKATE DIBENEDETTO (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) made the score 8-5 with and unassisted marker. Brocklebank had the next two goals as the MSU lead grew to 10-5 and Gillin assisted on Daily's second goal with 13:12 to play as Montclair built a six-goal cushion. Blaine finished off the run with her third of the game 31 seconds later as Montclair State led 12-5.

Senior goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) made 10 saves for Montclair State while Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) made nine saves.

Gillin, who was named the MVP of the tournament for a second straight year, had a pair of draws in the game. Tanis led Montclair with four draws and three ground balls while Blaine had three caused turnovers. Montclair State outshot Stevens 34-24 in the game and held a 16-14 edge in ground balls and won 12 of the 21 draws in the contest.

Beth Rychcik ( Pleasant Valley , NY / Arlington ) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Ducks with Pigott added three draw controls. Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls , OH / Chagrin Falls) had two assists.
