Cooper Gets First Win as MSU Splits at Red Dragon Classic

The recap below is part of the Red Hawk Retrospective where we chronicle past Fall seasons.

Cortland, NY 
– The Montclair State volleyball team gave new head coach Elise Cooper her first win on Saturday as the Red Hawks split their final two matches in the Red Dragon Classic held at SUNY Cortland.

Montclair (1-3) swept past Swarthmore College, 3-0 before suffering a three-set loss to 2006 NCAA participant Skidmore College.


KARA BURNHAM had 22 kills in the two matches while setter RAISA SILVA registered 73 assists and 24 digs.


Freshman DEVON JOHNSTON led the way in the win over Swarthmore as the Red Hawks recorded a 30-25, 30-24, 30-28 victory. Johnston had 13 kills and hit .571 while adding two service aces and 37 digs. Sophomore ANNA CHESNAKOVA recorded a team-best 17 kills and hit .438 with five block solos while KAREN MARTIN registered 10 kills, three service aces and 30 digs.


Silva had 41 assists to go along with her 14 digs and Burnham added eight kills. Libero MEGHAN STEVENS posted 36 digs.


Against Skidmore, Burham posted 14 kills and two total blocks as MSU fell to Skidmore, 30-15, 30-20, 30-26. Chesnakova had nine kills and two total blocks while Johnston added six kills and 40 digs. Stevens and JINA MARSANO
 combined for 75 digs with 35 and 40, respectively.

The Red Hawks return to action on Thursday, September 6 as they travel to John Jay College for a 6:00 pm matchup with the Bloodhounds. Last season, MSU recorded a 3-0 sweep of John Jay on the road.
