Montclair, NJ (9/21/07) – Sophomore
MEGAN WALSH (Lumberton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) scored the game's lone goal early in the second half as 13 th-ranked Montclair State edged Muhlenberg College, 1-0 in NCAA Division III field hockey action at Sprague Field on Friday evening.
Senior forward
JENNIFER TANIS ( Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson) tied the Montclair State career record for assists as the Red Hawks remained unbeaten and set the record for the best start in program history as MSU moved to 8-0 on the year.
Junior goalkeeper Michelle Consiglio ( Ramsey, NJ / Ramsey) stopped nine shots for the Mules, who fell to 5-3 with the loss.
Montclair State goalkeeper Jackie Supko ( Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) and Consiglio kept the game scoreless through the first 35 minutes while Consiglio made six saves and Supko made five during the first half. Consiglio came up with two in the first three minutes and Supko made three during a flurry eight minutes into the contest. Consiglio made two more stops and then denied Tanis at 14:32 of the period as the game remained deadlocked. Supko would collect her final two saves of the half stopping Kelly Shetron ( West Chester, PA/East) and Jillian Duffy ( Massapequa, NY/ Massapequa) inside the final two minutes of the half.
In the second half, Lauren Rutt (Stevens, PA/ Cocalico) had two shots to open the period, one that was blocked by a defender and the second that was knocked away off the backline by MSU's
KATHLEEN LEONE (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick). Montclair State would counter and finally break through as
MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) fired a shot from the top off the circle off a penalty corner. Consiglio kicked away the attempt and then stopped Tanis' attempt on the rebound. However, the ball bounced over the left side of the cage where Walsh tapped in the loose ball for her fifth goal of the year with 24:57 to play.
Tanis picked up the assist, the 30 th helper of her career as she matched Janel Bertini's mark from 1998-2001 and now owns a share of the MSU records for goals (49), assists (30) and points (128).
The Red Hawks nearly added to the lead 15 minutes later as Pietrunti put a shot on net that was swept away on a defensive save by Kristin Garbutt ( Galloway, NJ / St. Joseph). Muhlenberg would come within inches of tying the game with 7:24 left. Off a penalty corner Nikki Rhoads ( Fleetwood, PA/ Oley Valley) lofted a shot that clanked off the cross bar. The ball remained in the circle and Duffy got off another shot that Red Hawk defender
SHANNON GILL (Branchville, NJ/High Point Regional) slapped away to keep MSU in front.
Supko finished with the five saves for Montclair State. Muhlenberg held a 13-12 edge in shots while Montclair State led in penalty corners, 9-6.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, September 25. Montclair State will host No. 3 The College of New Jersey at Sprague Field beginning at 6:00 pm. Muhlenberg is on the road for a 4:00 pm game at Haverford.
