Old Westbury, NY (9/8/07) – Sophomore CHRISTINE TOSKOVICH collected 10 kills and 10 service aces as Montclair State swept both of its matches on the first day of the Panther Invitational held at SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks, who improved to 4-3, downed Baruch and Farmingdale State, 3-0.
Sophomore KARA BURNHAM and freshman DEVON JOHNSTON each had 17 kills as the Red Hawks ran their winning streak to three matches. The victories also put MSU over .500 for the first time since September 16, 2005, when it had the identical 4-3 record.
The Red Hawks downed Baruch, 30-18, 30-18 and 30-19 behind and 11-kill, nine dig performance (.500 hitting percentage) from Johnston. Burnham added eight kills and five digs while ANNA CHESNAKOVA posted six kills and 2.5 blocks. Toskovich had four kills, seven service aces, and two digs. Setter RAISA SILVA had 33 assists, and KAREN MARTIN contributed six kills and four aces. Libero Megan Stevens led Montclair with 11 digs.
Burnham recorded nine kills and three digs as the Red Hawks swept past Farmingdale State, 30-23, 30-21, and 30-17. Toskovich and Johnston registered six kills and three service aces apiece while Johnston also collected 11 digs. Stevens had 19 digs, and Chesnakova posted seven kills and four block solos. Silva had 32 assists and four digs.
Montclair State closes out its Panther Invitational appearance on Sunday as MSU plays Lincoln University at Noon, followed by a 2:00 pm match against host SUNY Old Westbury.
