Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Ouedraogo Double-Double Sparks WPU Past Montclair, 69-59

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore forward Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (Newark, NJ / Newark Science) posted a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds and added four blocks and three steals while sophomore guard Joseph Ellis (Newark, NJ / Newark Science) added 18 points of his own as William Paterson knocked off Montclair State, 69-59 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division Men's Basketball matchup at Pazner Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

Senior guard Jason Cameron (Cliffside Park, NJ / Cliffside Park) added nine points – all on three-pointers as the Pioneers posted their second straight win and improved to 11-3 overall while staying unbeaten in the NJAC North at 3-0. WPU also continued its dominance over its local rival of late with its eighth straight win against MSU.

Junior forward RYAN WASHINGTON (Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) had 17 points and nine rebounds for Montclair State, which had a two-game winning streak of its own snapped with the loss. The Red Hawks are now 8-7 overall, 2-2 in the league's North Division.

Montclair State jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first 9:16 of the game as Washington scored seven of those points while JON GEORGES (West Orange, NJ / St. Peter's Prep) capped the spurt with a layup. But William Paterson responded with a 21-5 run over the next seven minutes to take the lead. Cameron sparked the run with back-to-back three-pointers and added his third with 4:33 to play to give the Pioneers a 25-22 advantage.

Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, NJ / Teaneck) added a layup to make the score 29-23 with 3:51 remaining, but  Montclair put up seven straight points, including four by CARLOS PENA (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) to take back the lead 30-29 with 53 seconds left. Ouedraogo, who had 14 points in the first half, put WPU back in front with a layup with seven seconds on the clock and Seve Cousins (Haledon, NJ / St. Joseph's Regional) beat the first-half buzzer with a jumper as William Paterson led 33-30 at the half.

In the second half, the Pioneers opened up the lead to double-digits as Ellis converted a three-point play for a 45-35 lead and WPU would eventually grow the advantage to 60-46 with 7:53 to go as Bobby Dunn (Garwood, NJ / Johnson Regional) put in a layup.  The Red Hawks would get as close as 62-55 with four minutes to go on a three-pointer by JAMES WILLIAMS (Englewood, NJ / Dwight Morrow), but Ellis hit from short range and then added two foul shots as the lead was boosted back to 66-55 with 1:14 to play.

Spiegel finished with seven points for the Pioneers, who offset a struggling free-throw shooting evening (9-of-21) by outrebounding Montclair, 40-35, including 20 offensive boards. The Pioneers also committed just eight turnovers and capitalized on 17 MSU miscues by scoring 21.

Freshman guard TOM BONARD (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) added 13 points, three rebounds and three assists for Montclair State, which got 12 points from guard KEN DUDLEY (Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech).

Montclair State is now off until Monday, January 21 when the Red Hawks host Berkeley College at Panzer Gym at 7:00 pm. William Paterson is home at the Rec Center in Wayne on Saturday, January 19. The Pioneers take on New Jersey City University at 3:00 pm.
