Women's Soccer Tops William Paterson in Overtime

Montclair,NJ (10/25/08)  – Sophomore KATIE MINERVINI (Oceanport,NJ / Shore Regional) fired a shot inside the left post from the top of the 18 yardline with 1:28 remaining in the second overtime as Montclair State scored the final two goals in a 2-1 victory over local rival William Paterson in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer contest at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior midfielder NICOLE KOGUT (Swedesboro, NJ / Kingsway) scored the tying goal with less than a minute remaining as the Red Hawks moved back to the .500 mark at 8-8-1 overall with their first victory since October4. Montclair also solidified its position for the NJAC Tournament (Top six teams advance) as it improved to 4-3-1 in the league (13 points). The win vaulted MSU into fourth place with one game conference contest remaining.   Montclair , which began the day in sixth place, is tied with William Paterson (10-4-1,4-3-1 NJAC) and both are one point ahead of Kean University (6th at 12 points).  Montclair State now holds the tiebreaker with WPU by virtue of its victory should the two be tied at the end of the regular season.

Sophomore Drea Wagoner (Little Falls, NJ / Passaic Valley ) scored for William Paterson, which has dropped two straight and came within 48 seconds of capturing its first win against Montclair since 2003.

Wagoner's goal with eight seconds remaining in the first half appeared as if it would be the only score in the game, however Montclair would tie the match as Kogut gathered a ball on the right sideline from 25yards out and lofted a shot from a tough angle that caught goalkeeper Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, NJ / Morris Knolls) off guard. The ball went over Baker's head and bounced into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.

Neither team got a chance to win the game in the first overtime and it appeared that it would remain dead locked after the second OT period when Montclair intercepted a clearing pass and pushed the ball down toward the end line.  Freshman RACHEL SENYSZYN ( Succasunna , NJ /Roxbury) crossed a ball from the left side that hit a WP defender. The ball came out to Minervini, who settled the loose ball before firing her shot into the back of her net for the game winner. It was Minervini's second goal of the season, both game-winners.

A near scoreless first half, Montclair State got two of the best scoring chances in the first 45 minutes.  SYMONE SELDON (Trenton, NJ / Ewing) got a clear shot from in close on the right side that was blocked by Dana Bertoli (Rockaway, NJ / Morris Hills). The ball would bounce across to the other side where Jen Kelleher ( Englishtown , NJ / Old Bridge ) had another opportunity however Baker came back across the line to stop that shot.

William Paterson would get the lone goal of the period in the closing seconds as the Pioneers were awarded a free kick from just inside midfield.Kathleen Maggi ( New Milford , NJ / New Milford ) sent a ball into the box tha t looked like it would be scooped up by Tepperman. However the ball took a fortuitous bounce off the wet turf over the head of LEAH TEPPERMAN ( North Andover , MA / North Andover ) and toward the goal line where Wagoner was able to knock it in for her second goal of the season.

Tepperman finished with three saves while Baker made four. Montclair State held the edges in both shots (8-7) and corner kicks (5-4).
