Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Masterson Scores Twice as No. 5 Men's Soccer Tops Rutgers-Camden

Montclair, NJ (10/4/08) – Senior forward TYLER MASTERSON collected a pair of goals as fifth-ranked Montclair State is off to the best start in the program's history as the Red Hawks topped Rutgers-Camden, 4-1 in NJAC action at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday afternoon.

Senior ERIC PFEIFER and junior JOHN ESPOSITO each added goals as Montclair remained unbeaten, improving to 12-0-0 overall, 5-0-0 in the conference. The Red Hawks eclipsed their previous best start of 11-0-0 set by the 1969 squad and duplicated two years ago.

Junior Chase Komer had a goal for the Scarlet Raptors, who fell to 9-2-1 overall, 2-2-1 in the NJAC this season. Rutgers-Camden trails in the overall series, 14-8-4.

Each team got chances very early in the game. MSU's MICHAEL CULLEN had a header snared by goalkeeper Tim VanLiew a minute into the match while Montclair netminder NICK MELE collected a sliding hand save of a Shane McGrory attempt just over 90 seconds later.

MSU would get on the board at the 6:45 mark as Cullen collected a ball deep in the left corner before crossing a pass. Pfeifer, racing in on the near post, flicked a header to the far side past VanLiew for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Montclair lead.

Montclair would get several more opportunities to add to that lead as the Red Hawks outshot the Scarlet Raptors 13-5 in the first half. However, VanLiew kept the game close as he made seven of his 15 saves in the match during the first 45 minutes. One of those saves was a shot by Cullen on the left side. But the ball came back out to Masterson, who banged home the shot for his eighth goal of the season at 30:41 as Montclair led 2-0 at intermission.

The Scarlet Raptors got a goal back in the second half as McGrory was taken down inside the box at the 56:41 mark. Rutgers-Camden was awarded a penalty kick, and Komer converted the opportunity for his second goal of the year as the Raptors pulled within 2-1.

But the Red Hawks kept the pressure up and six minutes later extended the back to two goals on a near-identical copy of their second score. Cullen moved in alon the left side and let go of a shot that clanked off the crossbar back out to Masterson, who chipped the rebound in for his second of the game as the MSU lead grew to 3-1.

Masterson, the NJAC's leading scorer, had collected a point in all 12 Montclair State games this season. Esposito would get the final goal, his seventh of the season, as he buried a shot from the top of the box inside the right post with 7:34 remaining.

Mele made two saves for Montclair State, which outshot the Raptors, 30-8 while also holding a slim edge in corner kicks, 5-4.

Both teams return to action next week with non-conference contests. Montclair State is on the road against Mitchell College on Tuesday, October 7, with Rutgers-Camden hosting Arcadia.
