Ayanbeku Paces Women's Basketball Past Immaculata

Center Valley, PA (11/16/08) – Junior forward KISANDRA AYANBEKU (Burlington, MA / Randolph) scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds as Montclair State finished third at the DeSales Tip-Off Tournament with a 59-46 victory over Immaculata in the consolation game on Sunday.

Junior JACKIE BERRY ( Tuckerton, NJ / Pinelands Regional) had six points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as Montclair squared its record at 1-1.

The game was the first meeting between former AIAW powers since the 1979-80 season when Montclair recorded a 73-59.

Ayanbeku, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, gave Montclair a 2-0 lead as she scored 19 seconds into the game. But Immaculata jumped back in front and led until just over 12 minutes remaining when Montclair used an 11-3 run to take the lead for good.

Senior MARIANNE MCGOVERN ( Fair Lawn, NJ / Paramus Catholic) started the run with a three-pointer tying the game at 12-12 and a basket by freshman JAIME ERICSON ( Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) gave Montclair the lead. Berry would add a basket and Ayanbeku put the score at 20-15 at the Red Hawks took a 31-28 lead into the break.

In the second half, after MSU went up by seven Immaculata's Dominique Murray trimmed the lead to 37-34 with a layup. But Ericson hit from three-point range and added a layup following a McGovern basket as MSU quickly boosted the lead to 44-34 with 12 minutes left. MSU held its double-digit lead throughout much of the second half.

Ericson finished with nine points and two steals while JAMILEE PFLUG ( Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) had eight points, two rebounds and three assists.

Montclair State is now off for the next nine days as it returns to action on Tuesday, November 25 at Manhattanville College.
