Five in a Row as Montclair Beats Berkeley

Montclair, NJ – Senior forward RICHARD BROWN (Newark, NJ / Newark Tech) came off the bench to score 14 points and grab five rebounds as Montclair State got scoring contributions from 15 different players in an 80-40 victory over Berkeley College at the MSU Student Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore TOM BONARD ( Westfield, NJ / Westfield) had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists as the Red Hawks rolled to their fifth straight victory, upping their record to 5-3.

Forward Donovan Black ( Morristown, NJ / Morristown) had 14 points and four rebounds for Berkeley, which fell to 0-7.

Montclair State shot 60 percent from the field (38-of-63) from the field in the game and raced out to a 13-0 lead in the first 3:30 of the game. KEN DUDLEY ( Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech) got the ball rolling with a layup off the opening tap and Bonard buried a three for a five-point lead. Bonard would add another bucket and DANIEL MCRAE ( Orange, NJ / Newark Tech) scored off a dunk and layup to make the score 11-0. Bonard completed the game-opening run with a jumper from the right side.

Bonard had 11 in the first half and Brown scored 10 as he made five of his first six attempts from the floor. Sophomore SEAN YOUNG ( Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) grabbed seven rebounds as MSU led 40-17 at the break.

McRae had eight points, five rebounds and three assists in 18 minutes of action while Young had a team-high eight board, four on the offensive glass. Freshman guard ALI MIX ( East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) added eight points and four rebounds while classmate PAUL SILJEE ( Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) scored six points and pulled down three rebounds.

MSU held a huge advantage on the boards as the Red Hawks outrebounded the Bulldogs, 51-25.

Derron Chaplin ( Paterson, NJ / East Side) scored eight points and had five rebounds for Berkeley, which shot just 24 percent (12-of-50) for the game, including 1-of-12 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs also committed 27 turnovers.

Montclair State returns to action on Friday, December 12 as the Red Hawks compete in the Messiah / Hampton Inn Tournament in Grantham, PA. MSU takes on Averett (VA) in the opening round at 5:30 pm.
