Montclair, N.J. (February 20, 2008) – The Montclair State women's basketball team topped New Jersey City 61-49 in NJAC play.
The Red Hawks move to 15-9, 7-5 in the conference while NJCU falls to 8-17, 3-10 in conference.
An 8-0 run early in the sparked the Red Hawks, and the lead grew to 17 with 5:07 left in the first on a jumper by
CYNTHIA WARRINGTON. The Gothic Knights brought the lead down to eight, but
JESSICA GARRABRANT connected on a pair of layups, including one with a second left, to send MSU into the half leading 33-21.
The staunch Red Hawk defending forced 14 Gothic Knight turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, and Garrabrant notched 14 points and six boards in the first half.
NJCU trimmed the lead down to two at 35-33 before MSU embarked on a 6-0 rally.
JESSICA HORAN hit five free throws late in the game to cement the victory, as MSU limited NJCU to just three field goals over the final 4:47.
Garrabrant finished with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds, while
CATHERINE CRISTINO added 12 points.
JACKIE BERRY filled the stat-sheet with six points, five boards, four assists and four steals in the victory. Angela Fitzgerald led NJCU with 12 points, as Vanessa V. Espinoza added nine points and a team-high 10 boards.
