Second Half Run Sends Men's Lacrosse Past New York Maritime

Montclair, NJ (4/16/08) – Junior attack A.J. Bachman (Montville, NJ /Mountain Lakes) scored five of his six goals in the second half as Montclair State outscored New York Maritime 10-0 overt the final two periods en route to a 14-6 triumph in a Skyline Conference Men's Lacrosse matchup at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Junior TYLER MEIXNER (Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) added two goals and four assists while JOHN SCHIAVONE (Montclair, NJ / Montclair) collected three goals, two assists, 10 faceoffs (10-of-19) and six ground balls as the Red Hawks moved into sole possession of first place in the conference with the win. MSU, which has won three straight, is 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Senior Alex Rosero ( Bellport, NY / Bellport) had two goals and three assists for the Privateers, who fell to 8-3 overall, 2-1 in the Skyline as their two-game winning streak came to an end.

Maritime led 6-4 at halftime as the Privateers picked up a key goal late in the second half. With Montclair on the man-advantage, the Red Hawks turned the ball over and Rosero found Alex Korb ( islip, NY/ Islip) with 15 seconds left before halftime as Maritime took the two-goal lead into the break.

The Red Hawks quickly trimmed the lead to a goal in the second half as Bachman scored off a Meixner assist 2:33 into the period and a Meixner goal 44 seconds later tied the game. Schiavone gave MSU its first lead of the game at 7-6. with a man-up goal at 5:32 of the period. Schiavone would scored again to make it for goals in a 4:13 span and Bachman's two tallies 31 seconds apart with just under four minutes to go gave Montclair a 10-6 lead. Meixner capped off the seven-goal period for the Red Hawks with an unassisted tally as MSU led by five heading into the final period.

Meixner would have a hand in all three fourth-period goals as he fed Bachman with 8:32 to play and the duo connected again, this time on the man-advantage as Montclair led 13-6 with 4:17 left. Sophomore KEVIN DYER ( Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) capped the scoring with 2:35 left as the Red Hawks outshot the Privateers, 33-10 in the second period.

MSU goalkeeper THOMAS BOWERS (Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XIII) had 13 saves for MSU, which finished with a 48-31 advantage in shots and 39-20 lead in ground balls, including eight by freshman ANTHONY DZIENKIEWICZ (Jackson, NJ / Jackson), who also tied PATRICK FERRY's (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) single-game record with seven caused turnovers. Ferry had five caused turnovers of his own while MATT SHARP ( Wilmington, DE / Salesianum) added five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

For Maritime, sophomore Colin Gallagher ( Syracuse, NY/Westhill) posted a game-high 17 saves. Donald Toby ( Oceanside, NY / Oceanside) won eight faceoffs (8-of-15) and registered three ground balls while T. J. Beaudette ( Floral Park, NY / Floral Park) recorded a team-best five ground balls.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, April 19. Montclair State goes out-of-conference for the final time this season as the Red Hawks travel to Allentown, PA to face Muhlenberg College at 7:00 pm.
