Women's Lacrosse Tops Kean to Win Third Straight Skyline Championship

Montclair, NJ (5/3/08) – Senior midfielder BETHANY BLAINE (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) scored three goals and added an assist in earning Most Valuable Player honors as top-seeded Montclair State made it three straight Skyline Conference Women's Lacrosse titles with a 15-4 victory over Kean University at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore MORGAN MACPHEE (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) added four goals as the Red Hawks (9-7) earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship. It will be MSU's second straight NCAA Tournament as the Red Hawks reached last year's second round in the program's first appearance. Montclair has won all three Skyline titles since the conference's formation in 2006 and has won 23 consecutive games against league competition, including tournaments.

Freshman attack Amanda South (Fairless, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) scored three goals for the Cougars, who had their six-game winning streak snapped with the loss. Kean (14-5) will now wait to see if it will be one of the teams selected for the ECAC Championship, which will be announced on Monday.

Meeting for the second time this season, the Red Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. NICOLE ROSELLE (Pine Brook, NJ / Montville) finished off a JENNIFER TANIS (Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson) feed 47 seconds in as Montclair grabbed the quick one-goal margin. MacPhee netted the first of her scores with 21:35 to play and MARYKATE DIBENEDETTO ( Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson), who had three goals, added her first 44 seconds later.

South would get the Cougars on the board 40 seconds later, but Blaine tallied the next three goals, including the final one with 13:04 left as MSU pushed its lead to 6-1. Stephanie Cirino ( Warminster, PA/William Tennent) cut that deficit to four with 5:34 to play, however LAUREN ADAMS ( Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) sparked a nine-goal run with just under five minutes left. MacPhee registered her second with 4:01 left before halftime as Montclair led 7-2 and she opened the second half converting a free-position attempt as MSU scored three times in the first four minutes, the final two by DiBenedetto, whose second score gave MSU an 11-2 advantage with 26:07 left in the game.

Adams scored once more and JAMIE HUDACKO ( Montville, NJ / Montville) scored twice before MacPhee capped the run with her 23 rd of the season making the score, 15-2 with 19:33 to play. South accounted for the final two goals, the latter her 58 th of the year.

Freshman goalkeeper TALIA KATZ (Lower Merion, PA / Lower Merion) made seven saves for Montclair State which held the advantages in shot (41-21) and draws (17-4). Freshman Ashley Berghold ( Boyertown, PA / Boyertown Area Regional) made a game-high 16 saves for the Cougars.

Blaine added five ground balls and four draws while MacPhee had six draws. Tanis, who collected three assists, recorded three ground balls, two draws and two caused turnovers. Cirino and Alli Green (West Deptford, NJ / West Deptford) had two ground balls and two caused turnovers apiece for Kean.
