The recap below is part of the Red Hawk Retrospective where we chronicle past Fall seasons.
Baltimore, MD (8/31/08) – Freshman midfielder SEAN PAULS scored 13 minutes into the game, and junior MICHAEL CULLEN added an insurance goal in the 77th minute as seventh-ranked Montclair State captured the Citrano Medical Labs Kick-off Classic held at Johns Hopkins University with a 2-0 victory against Buffalo State on Sunday.
Pauls was named MVP of the tournament as Montclair State begins a season at 2-0 for the fourth consecutive campaign and seventh time in the last eight seasons.
Pauls tallied his first career goal as he scored 13:47 into the contest off assists from TYLER MASTERSON and JOSEPH CULLEN.
That's how the game remained until the 13:08 to play when THOMAS BENACK fed MIKE VERMES on the left side. Vermes then sent the ball from right to left onto the head of MICHAEL CULLEN, who banged home the pass for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 MSU advantage.
Senior All-American goalkeeper NICK MELE stopped four shots as he notched his 38th career victory, one shy of Mark Williams' (1991-93) all-time record. It was also Mele's 23rd career shutout.
The Red Hawks are next in action on Wednesday, September 3, as they return home to MSU Soccer Park to take on Mount St. Vincent at 3:30 pm.
