Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Pietrunti's Penalty Stroke Sends Field Hockey Past Scranton

Montclair, NJ (9/10/08) – Junior forward MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) scored on a penalty stroke with 4:12 remaining in the first overtime period as 16th-ranked Montclair State outlasted the University of Scranton, 1-0 in a defensive field hockey battle at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Senior goalkeeper EMINA UDRJIA ( West Paterson, NJ / Passaic Valley) made three saves, including a key one in overtime as the Red Hawks are now 4-0. It is the second straight season that MSU needed extra time to defeat the Royals (3-2). Last year, MSU, now 9-0 all-time versus Scranton, posted a 2-1 win.

Montclair State outshot Scranton, 19-5; however, the Red Hawks could not manage a goal as defenders Beth McLaughlin (Middletown, NJ / Middletown South) and Megan Makara (Drexel Hill, PA / Arch. Prendergast) along with goalkeeper Kristina Goetz (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park Memorial) thwarted several Montclair opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Red Hawks defense was equally up to the task as, in turn, they held the Royals without a shot for the first 40:58 of the game. Corrie Szapka ( Northampton, PA/ Allentown Central Catholic) would get that opportunity, but it was knocked away by Udrjia.

In the final 10 minutes, the offensive play shifted toward the Red Hawks as MSU got six penalty corners. Still, it could not capitalize as Goetz made three saves, including one on JUSTINE DIPAOLO (Lanoka Harbor, NJ / Lacey) with 17 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

In the 7-on-7 extra period, Goetz made an essential stop on MEGAN WALSH ( Lumberton, NJ / Rancocas Valley ) 1:27 in to keep the contest going. A minute later, MSU turned the ball over in their own end, and Diana Rocklein ( Islip Terrace, NY/ East Islip) moved in one-on-one versus Udrjia, who came off her line and made a sliding stop, and the game kept going.

Following six more minutes of back-and-forth action, the Red Hawks moved the ball up the field as Peitrunti took a pass 30 yards out, made a move around McLaughlin, and was headed on a breakaway of her own when the whistle blew. Pietrunti was awarded the stroke and ended the game as she connected on her second tally.

Goetz finished with nine saves for Scranton, which was also out-cornered in the contest, 12-5.

Both teams are in action on Saturday, September 13, with road contests. Montclair State travels to Allentown, PA, to face Muhlenberg College while Scranton is at Albright College.
