Red Hawks Dominate in Three-Set Win Over Rutgers-Newark

Montclair, NJ (9/30/08) – Junior KAREN MARTIN had nine kills as Montclair State rolled past Rutgers-Newark for its second straight victory at the MSU Student Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.
The Red Hawks hit .531 and served up 13 aces as it disposed of the Scarlet Raiders 25-5, 25-7, 25-4 to improve to 11-6 overall, 3-1 in the NJAC.  DEVON JOHNSTON added six kills while Kristin Ruggieri tallied 20 assists and six digs.

Ruggieri opened the match with three consecutive aces staking the Red Hawks to a 6-0 victory. After Rutgers-Newark got on the board, Montclair reeled off the next seven points taking a 13-1 advantage on an ace by Johnston, who also had a kill in the spurt. Back-to-back kills by Burnham and Martin upped the score to 20-1 and Montclair grabbed a 1-0 lead in the match after an attack error by Rutgers-Newark completed the set.

In the second set, the Red Hawks jumped out to another 6-0 lead and led 10-1 after an ace from CHRISTINE TOSKOVICH. Montclair led 20-7 before scoring the final four points. Martin and Toskovich each had kills to start with Burnham's kill finishing off the 25-7 victory.

MSU put up 16 of the first 17 points of the third. Johnston served 12 consecutive points, including three service aces. Toskovich later added a kill and ace during a five-point run increasing the score to 23-3. Following a Scarlet Raider point, Ruggieri had a kill and a final attack error by the Scarlet Raiders ended the match.

MEGHAN STEVENS led the Red Hawks with 13 digs. Ruggieri recorded 20 assists.
