Swimming Knocks Off Drew

Montclair, NJ (12/5/09) – Sophomore KELLY ABNER (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) and freshman ASHLEY VALLONE (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) each won were two of three triple-winners on the women's side while freshmen MICHAEL ADAMS (Wharton, NJ / Pope John XXIII) and MICHAEL SMITH (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) each captured three events for the men as Montclair State swept a dual meet from Drew University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool on Saturday afternoon.

The MSU men knocked off the Rangers 100-82 to move to 2-3 on the season while the women's team got over the .500 mark at 3-2 following a 101-60 victory.

Montclair State finished first in all but one of the 22 events contested on the afternoon.

Abner swam the anchor leg of the winning 400 medley relay team as Montclair got off the right foot. Vallone, LAURA FLYNN (Andover, NJ / Lenape Valley) and GALINA LOUTCHOUK (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) teamed with Abner for a time of 4:32.53. Abner would go on to win the 200 individual medley (2:24.85) and then swam the top time in the 500 freestyle (5:51.04).

Vallone earned her two individual victories in the freestyle as she claimed the 100 event in a time of 56.75 and the 200 freestyle clocking in at 2:06.23. Flynn and Loutchouk also earned first-place showings in the 200 fly (2:26.15) and 1650 freestyle (19:31.93), respectively.  MARIA VIRA (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) had the top time in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.14) .

Junior LAURA SPADONI (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth Area) collected a pair of wins as she took top honors in the 50 freestyle (26.99) and then swam the leadoff leg of the top 400 freestyle quartet. Spadoni, CHRISTINA CROSSIN (Milford, CT / Lauralton Hall), JACKY MOE (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) and ALICE SROGA (Mahwah, NJ / Mahwah) registered a time of 4:02.93.

Adams was the second leg of the 400 medley relay team that swam 3:56.48 to take first place. Adams was joined by Sean Chambrovich (Allenhurst, NJ / Red Bank Regional), NIKOLAS LUMKONG (Andover, NJ / Pope John XXIII) and BLAISE LACCA (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township). Adams would go on to win the 200 individual medley (2:12.44) and 200 butterfly (2:14.65) to complete his outstanding afternoon.

Smith would get individual wins in the 200 freestyle (1:55.36) and 100 freestyle (50.80) before swimming the anchor leg in the 400 freestyle relay team. JASON JENNINGS (Cedar Run, NJ / Southern Regional), THOMAS LONG (Morristown, NJ / Morristown), MATT HYDE (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) and Smith clocked in at 3:36.19.

Chambrovich had the top time in the 200 backstroke (2:12.12) while DANIEL GORDON (Northfield, NJ / Mainland Regional) took first in the 1650 freestyle (19:05.81). Long added a victory in the 50 freestyle (22.59) and CHRIS LEE (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) won the 200 breaststroke (2:30.26). Lacca rounded out the Red Hawks day with the top time in the 500 freestyle (5:22.02).

The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, December 8 as Montclair hosts Division I Seton Hall University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool beginning at 5:00 pm.
