Softball Blanks Oneonta in Home Opener

Montclair, NJ (3/24/09) – Senior lefthander KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ / Edison) tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener while freshman righthander ADRIAN RASTOCNY (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) spun a five-hitter in the nightcap as Montclair State blanked Oneonta State in a doubleheader at the MSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Red Hawks (10-2) stretched their winning streak to 10 as they won by scores of 8-0 and 2-0 in the first meeting between the two schools. Oneonta fell back to the .500 mark as the Red Dragons are now 6-6.

Oneonta threatened in the top half of the first in the opening game. Savanah Keicher (Lindenhurst, NY / Lindenhurst) walked and moved to third as Jamie Llewellyn (Oneonta, NY / Oneonta) singled to right field. But Keicher was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice and Karp fanned the next batter to escape the jam.

The Red Hawks would then put three runs on the board in their first at bat. LESLIE GONZALEZ (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) walked, moved to second on a sacrifice and went third as JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ / Linden) singled up the middle. MEGAN DURKIN (West Orange, NJ /West Orange) laced a double down the left field line to score the first two runs and Karp helped her own cause with a base hit to make the score 3-0.

Montclair would add run in the fourth as Durkin scored on an error. The Red Hawks then closed out the game in fifth with three runs. Pinch-hitter LEIGH ANN MURDUCA (Jersey City, NJ / St. Dominic  Academy) led off with a single and advanced to third on a pair of outs before scoring on a wild pitch. SHANNON MOZEK (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) drew a walk and Jimenez blasted a pitch over the left field wall for her third home run of the season.

Karp improved to 5-0 as she won her 21st game in her last 22 decisions. She walked five and struck out four. Jessica Bartalsky (New  Paltz, NY / New Paltz) took the loss falling to 1-1.

Gonzalez, Jimenez and KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) had two hits apiece for Montclair State, which collected 11 hits in the game.

In the second game it was Rastocny who would get the shutout as upped her record to 5-1. The freshman righty scattered five hits, walked three and struck out five. Despite the strong outing, Rastocny was locked into a pitcher's duel with righthander Jillian Sullivan (Glens Falls, NY / Glens Falls), who kept MSU off the scoreboard until the sixth inning.  Sullivan fell to 2-2.

Jimenez drew a walk to start the inning off and came around to scored a Karp rocketed a ball through the left side that traveled all the way to the wall for a triple and a 1-0 Montclair State lead. Nance then stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single to left field accounting for the final run.

The Red Dragons best scoring opportunity came in the fourth as Lyndsey Berwick (New Windsor, NY / Newburgh Free Academy) walked to open the inning and a miscue on a bunt allowed pinch-runner Ashley Skovira (Meridale, NY / Delaware Academy) to reach second putting runners at first and second with one out. Both runners would move up on a passed ball, but Aly Helstrom (Montgomery, NY / Valley Central) popped up a bunt attempt and Skovira was doubled up ending the Oneonta threat.

Gonzalez had two hits for Montclair State while Stacey Donald (Saugerties, NY / Saugerties) was 2-for-3 for the Red Dragons.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 26 as the Red Hawks host DeSales University at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 3:00 pm. Oneonta State is back home to open SUNYAC play on Friday, March 27 as the Red Dragons host College at Brockport at 3:00 pm.
