Women's Lacrosse Topped by Rowan in NJAC Opener

Montclair, NJ  (4/11/09) – Senior midfielder Carly Welsh (Allenwood, NJ / Wall) scored five times and picked up two assists as Rowan University seven of the game's nine goals during a key run in the second half, pulling away for a 15-10 victory over Montclair State in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Kelly Angstadt (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) added three goals as the Profs moved back over .500 at 6-5 overall while staying unbeaten during the inaugural season of the NJAC at 3-0.

Senior midfielder MARYKATE DIBENEDETTO (Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson) had four goals and an assist for Montclair State, which fell to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC. LAUREN ADAMS (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) and KAYLA HENDERSON (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) each had two goals

Rowan led 5-3 after the first 30 minutes of play, but scored four straight to open the second half. Ali Dickey (Stevensville, MD/Ken Island) netted the first two with the second coming with 22:06 remaining as the Profs led 7-3. Welsh scored un assisted just under a minute later and Angstadt found the back of the net 28 seconds after that as Rowan's lead increased to 9-3 with 20:47 left.

Montclair State would get two back as DiBenedetto and Henderson scored inside the 19-minute mark to trim the lead to 9-5, but Welsh registered two scores and Ali Goodman (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) recorded the first of her two goals as the Profs boosted the lead back to 12-5 with 11:47 to play. Following a DiBendetto goal, the Rowan would tack on three goals in a 1:48 span to take it largest lead of the contest. Trish Harrington (Mahwah, NJ / Suffern (NY)), Alayna Morris (Columbus, NJ / Northern Burlington Regional) and Goodman each scored as Rowan led 15-6 with 5:55 to go.

Montclair State would close the gap with four goals in the final 3:47, the last two by DiBendetto as MAGGIE FALLON (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic) and CORA DELFINI (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) also scored in the run.

Senior goalkeeper Alicia Mannino (Richboro, PA / Conwell-Egan Catholic) made nine saves for Rowan, which held a 29-24 advantage in shots.  Senior defender Stacie McKinley (Seaville, NJ / Ocean City) had four ground balls for the Profs.

Freshmen goalkeepers TRACEY MANELLA (Haworth, NJ / NV-Demarest) and CHRISTINA CROSSIN (Milford, CT / Lauralton Hall) made four and two saves, respectively for the Red Hawks. Junior MORGAN MACPHEE (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) had five ground balls and three caused turnovers for MSU.

Montclair State is back in action on Wednesday, April 15 as MSU heads to Riverdale, NY to face the College of Mount St. Vincent in a Skyline Contest at 7:00 pm. Rowan is at FDU-Florham on Tuesday, April 14 for a 4:00 pm matchup in Madison, NJ.
