Softball Downs Baruch in Twinbill

Little Falls, NJ (4/23/09) –  Pitchers KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ / Edison) and Elia Perscio (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) combined on a four-hitter in the opener while KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) and AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY / Clarkstown North) each drove in four runs in the second game as Montclair State swept a doubleheader with Baruch College at the MSU Softball Stadium winning 3-1 and 11-0.

Second baseman MEGAN DURKIN (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) had three hits and two RBI in the doubleheader as the Red Hawks upped their record to 21-13 on the season. Andrea Tepfer (Staten Island, NY / Susan Wagner) and Vianka Nieves (Brooklyn, NY / Bishop Kearney) had two hits apiece for the Bearcats, who fell two games below the .500 mark at 17-19.

In the first game, Karp picked up her 10th win of the season (10-7) as she allowed four hits and worked her way around six walks as she also fanned eight batters in the game. Tepfer (11-8) suffered the loss giving up three runs and eight hits. She struck out seven and walked two.

Montclair would break a scoreless tie in the third with two runs. SHANNON MOZEK (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ / Linden). Livsey would follow with a run-scoring single of her own as MSU went up 2-0. The Red Hawks would add a run in the fourth, again with two outs as Durkin singled and scored as SAMANTHA DEPKEN (Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo) doubled to centerfield.

But that would be all MSU would get off Tepfer. Meanwhile the Bearcats got a rally of its own going in the fifth as it loaded the bases with no one out.  But Montclair pulled off a successful pick off play to third to get the first out and then got a double-play grounder to end the threat as MSU held on to its 3-0 lead.

The Bearcats would get the same situation in the seventh as it again packed the bags full with no out on a pair of walks and an error. Persico came in and Montclair turned an improbable triple play to end the game. Erica DeRosa (Clark, NJ / Academy for Info Tech) grounded to shortstop. Jimenez flipped to Durkin at second who then threw on to first base for the second out. On the play, first baseman Livsey fired a strike to third base getting the runner for the final out. Cristina Arce (Iselin, NJ / John F. Kennedy) scored on the play to give Baruch its only run.

Mozek and Jimenez each had two hits for MSU while Tepfer was 2-for-3 for the Bearcats.

In the second game, MSU wasted little time getting on the board as it scored four times in the first. Nance singled home two runs and ADRIAN RASTOCNY (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) and Dukin followed with back-to-back RBI singles.

Montclair added to its lead in the second as Livsey plated two runs with a single for a 6-0 lead. Nance blasted a two-run homer, her fourth, and Durkin collected an RBI double as the Red Hawks led 9-0 after two innings. Montclair's final two runs came on a two-run home run by Livsey in the third. It was Livsey's second of the year.

Junior righthander LEIGH ANN MURDUCA (Jersey City, NJ / St. Dominic Academy) earned the win as she improved to 2-0. Murduca allowed two hits, struck out four and walked two before giving way to Michele Moat (Waldwick, NJ / Waldwick), who tossed a scoreless final inning. Lynn Schiano (Middle Village, NY / St. Francis Prep) took the loss to fall to 5-8.

Livsey, Nance, Rastocny and Durkin had two hits each for MSU.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 25 as the Red Hawks host Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 1:00 pm
