Softball Topped by Staten Island in Doubleheader

Staten Island, NY (4/9/09) – Despite a 5-for-7 performance from senior shortstop JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ / Linden), including 4-for-4 in the second game, Montclair State dropped a non-conference doubleheader with Staten Island on Thursday. The Red Hawks (16-10) fell 5-1 and 6-4.

CSI started with a run in the bottom of the first inning off an RBI double by Katie Flynn. Montclair had their best inning at the top of the third off four hits and scoring their lone run of the game and also tying the game at 1-1 as AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY / Clarkstown North) singled home a run.

It was the fifth inning that was big for CSI where they scored the remainder of their four runs while taking to go ahead for the win. Estrada singled to center to score Jen Volpe who reached on a walk. The CUNY Rookie of the Week, Flynn, struck again as she doubled to center field for a two run RBI. Carmella Lubrano got up to bat and singled to bring Jenna Schulman, who was pinch running for Flynn, across the plate.

Danielle Ponsiglione pitched a complete game allowing one earned run and eight hits.

With the Red hawks silent at the top of the first in game two, Raechel Strobel walked to bring Estrada up to bat. Estrada slammed a two run homer over the left field wall. Play then halted as Montclair called Estrada's bat into question. After nearly a half hour delay, the game continued with Montclair State agreeing to continue under protest.

The Dolphins didn't let that get them down scoring two more runs that inning off a two RBI double by Jillian Graneiro. The top of the second inning saw Montclair score a single run to put the score at 4-1. CSI extended their lead as they tacked on another two runs in the bottom second behind the works of Joanna Tepedino's two run double with three on base.

Montclair answered at the top fifth with two runs with RBI singles by Jimenez and KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ / Edison). With their last chance at the top of the seventh, Montclair tallied one run with a sac-RBI by Livsey scoring MEGAN DURKIN (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) who reached on a single. Freshman pitcher Michelle Ferraiuolo took the win allowing three runs while Ponsilgione had the save allowing one earned run.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, April 11 as they travel to Pomona, NJ to face Richard Stockton College in an NJAC doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
