Softball Stays Alive in NJAC Tournament with Win Over Kean

Glassboro, NJ (5/1/09) - Junior righthander Elia Perscio (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) tossed a six-hit shutout while junior rightfielder KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) drove in a pair runs as sixth-seeded Montclair State remained alive in the NJAC Softball Championship with a 6-0 victory over No. 5 seed Kean University on Friday.

The Red Hawks move on to Saturday's action against Ramapo at 1:30 pm. The Roadrunners upset No. 1 Rowan University to also remain alive in the tournament.

Persico collected her second shutout of the season and second against the Cougars (19-9) as she struck out one and walked one in upping her record to 4-2 this season. Cassie Shotwell (11-10) too the loss as she allowed six runs and six hits, fanning two and issuing six walks.

Montclair State got all the support Persico would need in the first inning from its trio of All-NJAC outfielders. Centerfielder LESLIE GONZALEZ (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) walked and SHANNON MOZEK (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) was hit by a pitch. Nance singled to right field scoring Gonzalez with the game's first run. MSU loaded the bases and collected its second run as MEGAN DURKIN (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) drew a walk to make the score 2-0. Catcher KACIE NEUROUTER (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) singled in the field to drive in another run as the Red Hawks handed Persico a three-run lead.

MSU added to its lead in the third taking advantage of a Kean error. AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY / Clarkstown North) walked and ADRIAN RASTOCNY (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) followed with a base hit. Durkin bounced into a fielder's choice, but an errant throw on the play allowed Livsey to cross the plate as Montclair led 4-0.

The Red Hawks tacked its two final runs in the sixth. SAMANTHA DEPKEN (Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo) walked and went to second on a ground out. She would move to third on a single by Mozek and scored as Nance grounded into a fielder's choice. Livsey followed with a sacrifice fly for the sixth run.

Mozek finished 2-for-2 for Montclair State.
