MSU Splits Final Two Matches at Red Dragon Classic

Cortland, NY (9/5/09) – Senior middle blocker KARA BURNHAM (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) posted 15 kills while classmate SAMANTHA KARPINSKI (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) added 13 kills as Montclair State split its final two matches at the Red Dragon Classic at SUNY Cortland on Saturday.

Montclair (1-3) topped Baptist Bible in four sets before dropping a five-set decision to University of Rochester.

Burnham and Karpinski each had seven kills as MSU downed Baptist Bible 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23. Freshman ALYSSA BATISTE (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) added six kills while senior ANNA CHESNAKOVA (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) registered four kills. Freshman JENNA TOTARO (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) had 15 assists and seven digs while junior KRISTEN BRONOWICH (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) served up three aces along with eight digs. Senior MEGHAN STEVENS (Woodcliffe Lake, NJ / Pascack Hills) led the Red Hawks with 20 digs.

Against Rochester, the Red Hawks dropped the first two sets before knotting match with wins in sets three and four, 25-11 and 25-18, respectively. The Yellow Jackets would win the decisive fifth set, 15-12.

Burnham posted eight kills and seven total blocks, including four solo. Karpinski and Chesnakova had six and five kills, respectively with Totaro recording 21 assists. Stevens had 18 digs with Bronowich getting 10.

The Red Hawks are now off until next Saturday, September 12 when they play the first contest in the newly renovated Panzer Athletic Center. Montclair State will host Vassar College at 2:00 pm.
