Women's Soccer Rallies to Top Vassar 2-1

Poughkeepsie, NY (10/20/10) – The Montclair State women's soccer team scored twice inside the final 10 minutes as the Red Hawks knocked off Vassar College, 2-1 at Gordon Field on Wednesday evening.

In the 89th minute, Montclair State sophomore forward RACHEL SENYSZYN (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) crossed a seemingly harmless ball into the box with no teammates around. Vassar's failed clear attempt went right to junior CHRISTINA DEMARTINIS (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon), who immediately ripped a shot into the upper left corner for the game-winning goal at the 88:47 mark.

The Brewers outshot the Red Hawks 19-12 (10-2 in the first half) and had more scoring opportunities in the contest with several near misses. Vassar finally converted in the 67th minute as sophomore Keiko Kurita beat a defender to a loose ball and then threaded a pass to senior captain Carolyn Demougeot who turned and blasted a shot into the upper right corner from the edge of the box for her 28th career goal.

Undeterred, the Red Hawks chipped away at the lead and put together a fine series of passes equalizer goal in the 83rd minute. Senior midfielder JACKIE MCGRATH approached the Brewer defense on the box's left side and dished wide to Senyszyn on her left, who took a few dribbles and cut a pass backward. Trailing and wide open, senior captain Katie Minervini (Oceanport, NJ / Shore Regional) timed her run-up to the ball and struck a shot of the crossbar in the center of the goal and in to tie the game at 1-1.

Sophomore MARISA ZAYAC (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) picks up the win with eight saves and improves to 6-7-3. Sophomore Lexi Hutton made six saves and is 7-4-1 this season.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, October 23, as they celebrate Senior Day with a 6:00 pm matchup against Richard Stockton at Sprague Field. The game will be a crucial contest in the NJAC Tournament race as Montclair is currently in eighth place, two points out of the sixth and final spot.
