Carroll Nets Hat Trick as Field Hockey Tops King's on Senior Day

Montclair, NJ (10/30/10) – Freshman midfielder BRITTANY CARROLL (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) collected her first career hat trick while senior MELISSA FLAHERTY (Fishkill, NY / John Jay) added a goal and three assists as Montclair State posted its second straight victory, downing King's College 4-1 at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore goalkeeper MEGAN BOSLAND (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) stopped five shots as the Red Hawks notched their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-6 overall. MSU registered 10 or more wins for the 11th consecutive season and the 12th time in program history.

Senior forward Danielle Terracciano (Columbus, NJ / Northern Burlington) scored for King's, which suffered just its fourth loss in 18 outings this season. The Monarchs also had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Each team traded scoring chances within the first three minutes of the contest before Montclair got the first goal on the board at 15:22 of the opening period. Moving the ball down inside the circle, Flaherty moved along the right side before firing a shot from the top. Carroll was there to redirect the tip in for her sixth of the season as MSU grabbed a 1-0 lead.

King's answered back just over seven minutes later. Terracciano lifted a looping shot in the air over the head of Bosland; however, MSU's KELLY CHURCHILL (Newton, NJ / Newton) stopped the ball from going in with a defensive save. The ball the trickled back up, and Terracciano alertly tapped in the rebound for the goal, her 12th as the Monarchs tied the game at 1-1 with 12:17 to go before halftime.

Montclair State countered with two goals in the final seven minutes of the first half. The Flaherty-Carroll connection struck again with 6:57 left. Flaherty moved along the right side off a penalty corner before flipping a pass to Carroll in front of the goal as MSU regained the lead. Flaherty collected her goal with 55 seconds remaining to put a rebound into the cage as the Red Hawks took their 3-1 lead at the half.

Carroll netted the hat trick with the only goal of the second-half scoring at the 44:40 mark. Flaherty got the assist.

Senior goalkeeper Erin McGinley (Kingston, PA / Wyoming Seminary) had eight saves for the Monarchs.

Montclair State outshot King's 19-12 and had an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The Red Hawks return to action on Monday, November 1, as they take on Kean University to complete their suspended on September 22. In that game, Montclair was leading 3-0 with 7:53 to play in the first half when lightning and rain forced the game to be suspended. King's now turns its attention toward the Freedom Conference Tournament as the Monarchs host FDU-Florham in the opening round on Wednesday, November 3, at 4:00 pm.
