Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Flies Past New Paltz 3-1

Montclair, NJ (10/8/10) – Senior forward DEANA HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) had a hand in all three goals, scoring once and assisting on the other two as Montclair State posted its second straight win downing New Paltz, 3-1 at Sprague Field on Friday evening.

MELISSA FLAHERTY (Fishkill, NY / John Jay) and JESSICA MURPHY (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) had goals as the Red Hawks improved to 8-3 on the season.

Hagel got off the first three shots of the game. Her first 4:16 into the contest was stopped by goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri. Ten minutes later, Hagel would get a second chance, but the two were denied by Pjerti. The ball would come back out on the rebound, and this time Hagel cashed in, collecting her seventh goal of the year as Montclair State led 1-0 at the 14:12 mark.

The Red Hawks would extend the lead to 2-0 at 23:27 of the opening period. Off a penalty corner, Hagel made the insert to Murphy, who banged home the shot for her fourth as MSU led by two at the break.

In the second half, New Paltz came within inches of cutting the deficit as Sara Schloss put forth a shot that clanked off the post. Five minutes after that, Montclair would turn that piece of good fortune into a third goal. Hagel let go of a shot from outside the circle. The Red Hawks entered the circle where it would be redirected by Flaherty for her fourth of the season as Montclair led 3-0 with 20:29 remaining.

However, New Paltz came right back, trimming the lead back to 3-1 as Schloss found the back of the cage stuffing in the rebound from five yards out. That would be as close as the Hawks (6-6) would get as MEGAN BOSLAND (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) stopped the only shot New Paltz would get over the game's final 20 minutes. Bosland finished with three saves.

Montclair returns to action on Wednesday, October 13, as the Red Hawks travel to Madison, NJ, to face Drew University at 7:00 pm.
