Women's Basketball Sprints Past Cabrini in Home Opener

Montclair, NJ (11/23/10) -- Junior guard JAIME ERICSON (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half, to lead Montclair State University to an easy 71-39 home victory over Cabrini College in a non-conference contest Tuesday night at the Panzer Athletic Center.

Montclair State (2-2), which won its home opener for the first time in the last three years. led from the opening tip and never looked back.

Senior forward KISANDRA AYANBEKU (Brockton, Mass./Randolph), who turned in a double-double performance with 16 points and 10 rebounds, got the Red Hawks off to a flying start by scoring eight straight points as MSU opened up an 11-2 margin in the game's first four minutes.

Montclair State increased the margin to 19-2 before holding its biggest advantage of the first half at 24-5 with 10:59 to play.

Cabrini (0-4), which struggled from the field (.234) and from the free throw line (.261), managed to shut down the Red Hawks towards the end of the half, holding MSU scoreless for the final five minutes to go into the intermission down 31-20. The Cavaliers got the deficit down to nine points (31-22) early in the second half, but that would be as close as they would get.

Erickson, who shot .500 from the field (8-16), including 3-6 from three-point range, helped Montclair State quickly improve its lead back to double digits with six straight points to give the Red Hawks a comfortable 37-22 lead with 17:28 remaining.

Freshman guard THERESA TOWNS (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) added a game-high nine assists for Montclair State.
Cabrini was topped by freshman guard Brittany Sandone (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), who scored nine points, and freshman forward Colleen Stewart (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester), who grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Montclair State will visit William Paterson University next Wednesday (Dec. 1) in its first New Jersey Athletic Conference contest of the season.
