Freeney Nets 21 as Montclair Wins Seventh Straight, 67-42

Montclair, NJ – Senior guard RODNEY FREENEY (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway) scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds as Montclair State posted its eighth straight victory with a 67-42 victory over Vaughn College at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

Junior ANDREW AUGUST (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) added 15 points and six rebounds as the Red Hawks improved to 8-1 on the year. It is Montclair's longest winning streak since a nine consecutive victories two years ago.
Freshman guard Joe Douglas (Hempstead, NY / Hempstead) collected 12 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots for the Warriors, who dropped their second straight. Vaughn is now 5-6 on the year.

Montclair State led from start to finish and jumped out to a14-2 lead in the first 5:23 of the contest. A.J. LARKIN (Passaic, NJ / St. Mary's) and August each put in baskets. Douglas countered for the Warriors, before MSU went on a 10-0 run over a three-minute span. TOM BONARD (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) got the spurt going with a jumper and August added four points around  a layup by Freeney making the score 12-2 with 15:31 remaining. Larkin finished off the run with a layup.

Vaughn would battle back outscoring Montclair State 15-4 in the next seven minutes to trim the lead to 19-17 on a Douglas layup with 7:47 to go. MSU would hold a 22-19 lead with just over four minutes left before embarking on a 12-3 run to end the first period. Freeney had eight of those points, including the first six as the Red Hawks led 34-22 at the break.

Bonard finished with five points, four rebounds and seven assists while senior CHARLES MILLER (Linden, NJ / Linden) added six points and nine rebounds off the bench.

Sophomore guard Jihad Cesar (Hempstead) added 10 points, seven rebounds , two assists and three steals for the Warriors. Al-Ameen Kabba (Springfield Gardens, NY / Queens Prep) posted six points and four rebounds.

The Red Hawks return to action on Friday, December 17 as they take on Mount Aloysius at 6:00 pm in the opening round of the Harold J. Brodie Tournament at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.
