MSU Struggles in Loss to No. 10 William Paterson

Wayne, NJ – No. 10 William Paterson (22-1, 11-0 NJAC) earned its 20th straight victory in decisive fashion, pulling away from visiting Montclair State (10-13, 3-9 NJAC) for a 77-51 victory Feb. 13.

Senior Bobby Dunn (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson Regional) led all scorers with his career-best 17 points, making seven of 10 from the field, while adding game bests of nine rebounds and five assists.  Classmate Joseph Ellis (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) contributed 11 tallies, and senior Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) chipped in 10 points, seven boards and three blocked shots.  Sophomore Nolan Hill (Edgewater, N.J./Bergen Catholic) added eight tallies and four rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench.

William Paterson was hot from the opening tip, racing out to a 26-8 lead 14:28 into the contest and entering the locker room with a 35-22 advantage.  After making 14 of 29 (.483) attempts during the first 20 minutes, the Pioneers were even better in the second half, shooting 60.7 (177-28) from the floor to go ahead by as many as 28 during the second stanza.

The Division III leader in scoring defense (53.9 ppg) and the fourth-best team in field-goal percentage defense (.367), William Paterson limited the Red Hawks to 19-for-59 (.322) shooting overall and a 4-for-15 (.267) effort from three-point range.  The Pioneers owned a 46-26 rebounding advantage, and out-scored MSU 26-16 in the paint and 20-10 in second-chance opportunities.

Junior RODNEY FREENEY (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) led Montclair State with nine points, while junior SEAN YOUNG (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood), freshman BRENDAN HOLLAND (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Trinioty Pawling) and junior TOM BONARD (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) each scored eight.

Montclair State will host New Jersey City Feb. 15 at 8:00 p.m.
