Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Senior Night Successful as Red Hawks End Year on High Note

Montclair, NJ - On Senior Night at the Panzer Athletic Center it was the three honorees – DANIEL MCRAE (Orange, NJ / Newark Tech), JOHN BYRNE (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) and KEN DUDLEY (Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech) – playing the big roles as Montclair State closed out its 2009-10 campaign with an 81-40 victory over City College of New York on Tuesday evening.

Byrne finished with a game-high 17 points while McRae added 12 points and tied a Montclair State single-game record with seven blocked shots as the Red Hawks won their second straight contest and finished the year at 12-13.

Freshmen Terrance Johnston (Astoria, NY / St. John's Prep) and Joseph Kawwa (Brooklyn, NY / Foundation Academy) each had 10 points for CCNY, which dropped its third straight. The Beavers fell to 7-18 on the season.

Montclair State led from the opening tap to the final buzzer as the Red Hawks scored the first five points of the game on a three-pointer by Byrne and layup from sophomore ALI MIX (East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus). After CCNY trimmed the lead to 6-4 on Israel Vickers' (Queens, NY / Campus Magnet) layup, Montclair widened its lead to 17-8 on  the second of several dunks by McRae in the contest.

An alley-oop dunk from TOM BONARD (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) to DAVID MCDANIEL (Plainfield, NJ / Rutgers Prep) got the lead into double digits and Byrne's three from the left side gave MSU a 30-13 lead with 4:23 left in the opening period. Byrne and Bonard would each hit again from behind in the arc in the final minute as Montclair State led 38-17 at the break.

Byrne finished 6-of-8 from the field, including 5-of-7 from long range. Byrne ended his career with 69 three-point field goals good enough for 12th place all time in Montclair State history. McRae collected four steals and added three rebounds as he tied the single-game record for blocks. The NJAC leader in that category, McRae matched the record set by Aljumar Earl in 1995 and most recently reached by Omar Boothe during the 2001-02 campaign. McRae closed out his two-year MSU career with 96 blocks, third-best in school history and his 63 this year the second-best single-season total.  Dudley handed out four assists and registered a steal as he finished with 319 assists (fourth-best all time) and 127 steals (seventh-best career total).

SEAN YOUNG (Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) chipped in with 11 points while McDaniel closed out his freshman campaign with eight points and seven boards. MARQUESSE SMITH (Teaneck, NJ / Bergen Tech) had five points and matched McDaniel for top honors with seven rebounds of his own.

Matas Rascius (Queens, NY / Grover Cleveland) pulled down 11 rebounds for the Beavers with Vincent Roberts (Baldwin, NY / Holy Trinity) adding 10 caroms and four blocked shots.
