Field Hockey Topped by Eastern in Season-Opener

Box Score Montclair, NJ (9/1/10) – Junior midfielder Hope Donnelly (Willow Grove, PA / Abington) scored a pair of goals as Eastern, ranked 19th in Division III, found the back of the cage three times in the second half en route to a 4-1 win over Montclair State in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday evening at Sprague Field.

Kim Campbell (Malvern, PA / Great Valley) and Abby Wagner (Glen Rock, PA / Susquehannock) scored a goal for the Eagles.

Freshman midfielder BRITTANY CARROLL (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) netted her first collegiate goal for the lone Montclair State goals as the Red Hawks fell to the Eagles in their season opener for the second straight season. Last year, Montclair dropped a 3-2 decision in St. David's, PA.

Donnelly put the Eagles on the board just 6:15 into the contest as she scored unassisted. Shannon Graybill (Stevens, PA / Cocalico) had her shot stopped by MSU keeper MEGAN BOSLAND (Lincoln Park, NJ / Boonton). But Donnelly was able to collect the loose ball for the goal and the quick 1-0 lead.

The Red Hawks would battle back, getting the game-tying goal just before the 20-minute mark. MICHELLE HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) set up Carroll for the goal as the two teams went into the break tied at 1-1.

In the second half, the Eagles would score twice in a 3:23 span. Wagner got the first goal, and Donnelly her second at 44:35, giving Eastern a 3-1 advantage. Yvonne Herbster (Middleburg, PA / Midd-West) accounted for the final goal with 3:29 to play in the contest.

Goalkeeper Laura Ressler (Media, PA/ Delaware County Christian) made just one stop as the Eagles limited MSU to five shots. Eastern recorded 10. Bosland made seven saves for Montclair State, which was also on the wrong end of the stat sheet in penalty corners, 10-6.

Montclair State returns to action with a weekend home set. The Red Hawks will host Wheaton (MA) at Sprague Field on Saturday, September 4, before taking on Rensselaer on Sunday (September 5). Both games are scheduled for 1:00 pm. Eastern returns home for a September 3 contest against Franklin & Marshall (4:00 pm).
