Men's Soccer Draws with Oneonta, Advances in Mayor's Cup

Oneonta, NY (9/10/10) – Sophomore midfielder DAN MENDOZA (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) scored the decisive goal in the final round of penalty kicks as Montclair State advanced to the finals of the Mayor's Cup Tournament, knocking off host Oneonta State following a scoreless draw on Friday afternoon.

MSU is now 2-1-2 after earning a tie. Because of the format of the tournament, there needed to be a winner, so the two teams went all the way to a shootout where the Red Hawks prevailed 5-4. The Red Hawks wil lface Whitowrth (WA) in the championship game on Saturday, September 11 at 4:00 pm.

For the fourth straight game, the Red Hawks dominated the stat sheet outshooting the Red Dragons, 30-10, including 12-5 in the second half and 7-1 in the second overtime period. Still, MSU was unable to get one past Oneonta netminder Maxwell Siegelman, who stopped 17 shots in the contest.

Junior goalkeeper ANTHONY ROGIC (Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) had three saves as he earned his second shutout of the season.

in the shootout, each team converted their first two attempts as senior LARRY GERAGHTY (Cranford, NJ / St. Benedict's Prep) and PAUL DEMARTINIS (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) each put their shots into the back of the net. Oneonta would miss its third attempt and MSU took a 3-1 lead as Sasa Dobrijevic (Lake Hiawatha, NJ / Parsippany) converted his attempts. After another make by Oneonta, KEVIN ZALEWSKI (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany) scored to give Montclair a 4-3 advantage heading into the final round of kicks.

Oneonta's Ian Tenzer made his attempt to tie the shootout at 4-4. However, Mendoza put Montclair State into the finals as he buried his shot into the back of the net.
