Women's Soccer Battles with No. 2 TCNJ

Ewing, NJ (9/25/10) – The Montclair State women's soccer team battled second-ranked The College of New Jersey throughout, but goals from the Lions in the early and latter portions of the contest proved to be the difference as the Red Hawks fell to the Lions, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The loss, MSU's third straight, dropped Montclair to 3-5-2 overall, 0-3-0 in the league.

Sophomore Amy Van Dyk (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) and freshman Sloan DePiero (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) each scored goals, while freshman goalkeeper Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) registered her eighth shutout in nine games.

Van Dyk put TCNJ on top early when she rifled a shot from 25 yards out into the bottom left pocket to give the Lions a 1-0 lead just 4:02 into the match. The home team dominated the better part of the opening half, outshooting the Red Hawks 8-3.

Both teams traded punches after the intermission, but with just over 10 minutes gone in the second half, TCNJ began applying more pressure to the Montclair defense. Sophomore Brenna Rubino (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) blasted a low shot from just inside the right corner of the box, but Red Hawks goalkeeper MARISA ZAYAC (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) made a diving save to keep it a one-goal game.

Later, sophomore Katie Landrigan (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) ripped a shot from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar. Junior Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick) won numerous balls out of the air in the midfield to keep the ball in the Red Hawks half of the field.

MSU (3-5-2, 0-3 NJAC) had its best scoring chance with 23:24 remaining when RACHEL SENYSZYN (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) found herself alone with the ball inside the box. She lined a hard shot, but Griffith was right there to make the save. Griffith finished with four saves in the game.

The Red Hawks controlled play over the next 15 minutes of the match, but the Lions iced the game when DePiero headed in a restart served by junior Nikki Migliori (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Montclair hosts Rutgers University-Newark on Wednesday, September 29, at MSU Soccer Park beginning at 4 p.m.
