Women's Soccer Draws With Virginia Wesleyan

Norfolk, VA (9/3/10) – Sophomore forward RACHEL SENYSZYN (Succasunna, NJ /Roxbury) scored early in the first half as the Montclair State women's soccer team registered a 1-1 draw with host Virginia Wesleyan in the Orthopaedic Associates of Virginia Classic on Friday evening.

Sophomore goalkeeper MARISA ZAYAC (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) made 12 saves, including a stop on a penalty kick as the Red Hawks are now 1-0-1 on the season.

Despite being outshot in the game 22-4, it was Montclair State getting on the board first. Zayac made two saves in the first 12 minutes keeping the game scoreless as MSU broke through at the 13:09 mark. Senyszyn blasted a shot on the run from the right side that got past Marlins' keeper Rachel Calkins for the contest's first goal.

That's how the game stood as Zayac tallied two more saves in the first half, helping Montclair to a 1-0 lead at the break. In the second half, Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure with 11 shots and had a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick. However, that would be snuffed out by Zayac, who stretched out to knock the kick away with her fingertips, keeping the Red Hawks in front 1-0.

The Marlins would eventually get the equalizer with 6:55 to play in the second half. Danielle Stephens (Round Hill, Va./Purcellville Loudoun Valley) knocked the ball in from the right on a pass from sophomore Christina Fernandes (Tinton Falls, N.J./Tinton Falls).

In the first overtime period, Zayac and Calkins each came up with saves on the only shots of the period. VWC added two more shots in the second OT, the first by Joby Lefever, whose shot was knocked away by Zayac. Jessica Edleman nearly ended the game with 1:44 left, but her shot clanked off the crossbar.

Calkins had two saves for Virginia Wesleyan.

The Red Hawks close out the action in the tournament on Saturday as they face Christopher Newport at 5:00 pm.
