Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Beats Wheaton 6-1

Montclair, NJ (9/4/10) – Senior forward DEANA HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) scored pair of goals and assisted on two others while KATE NORGARD (Columbia, NJ / North Warren) added two goals of her own as Montclair State jumped out to a five-goal lead en route to a 6-1 victory over Wheaton College (MA) at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior MELISSA FLAHERTY (Fishkill, NY / John Jay) and freshman Kelsi Ehehalt (Wall, NJ / St. John Vianney) each had a goal as the Red Hawks evened their record at 1-1 with the victory.

Senior forward Jenna Strock (Centerville, MA / Barnstable) had the lone goal for the Lyons, who also fell to 1-1.

Scoreless through the first 24 minutes, Montclair State finally broke through as Flaherty collected her first goal of the season. Hagel moved the ball down toward the end line before sliding a pass in front to Flaherty for the 1-0 lead at the 24:35 mark. Hagel then set up Norgard's first tally 3:07 later before recording the next two on her own.

Hagel's first came at 38:27 of the opening period as she banged in a rebound into the left corner for a 3-0 Montclair State lead at halftime. She collected her second tally at 53:18, picking off an errant clear in front of the cage. Norgard added her second of the game just over five minutes to extend the lead to 5-0.

Wheaton would avert the shutout with 6:03 to play. Off a penalty corner, Strock inserted the ball to Aliza Underhill (Corinth, ME / Central) on the left side. Underhill fired a shot toward the left post that Strock was able to redirect for the goal.

Ehehalt capped off the scoring with 2:47 remaining as she knocked in a pass from MICHELLE HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex).

MEGAN BOSLAND (Boonton, NJ / Lincoln Park) stopped seven shots to earn the victory. Alex Smith (Suffield, CT / Suffield) had 13 for the Lyons.

Both teams are back in action on Sunday, September 5. The Red Hawks are home to face Rensselaer while Wheaton will make the nine-mile journey west to Wayne as the Lyons meet William Paterson. Both games are scheduled for 1:00 pm.
