Hackettstown, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team closed out their regular-season schedule on Saturday as the Red Hawks split a pair of matches at Centenary College. Montclair (12-17) knocked off Manhattanville 3-1 before falling to host Centenary in five sets.
Sophomore outside hitter
MARTA TOPOR (Bogota, NJ / Bogota) had 33 kills, six service aces and 23 digs as Montclair defeated Manhattanville by scores of 25-13,25-20,22-25,25-19 before falling to Centenary 22-25,25-18,25-19,14-25,13-15.
Topor posted a season-high 20 kills along with five aces and 10 digs in the match with Manhattanville. Sophomore
Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ, Southern Regional) added six kills and eight digs while setter
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) chipped in with 34 assists, two aces and eight digs.
Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, NJ, Ramsey) and
Lauren Sharp (Mendham, NJ, West Morris-Mendham) had 22 digs apiece while libero
Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) led all players with 25 digs.
Batiste, Topor and Salemo each had double-doubles in the loss to Centenary. Topor led Montclair with 13 kills and had 13 digs while Batise had 11 kills and 11 digs along with three service aces. Salemo collected 10 kills and 23 digs while Irwin registered her second straight 25-dig performance on the day. Campo finished with 29 assists.
Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills) added three kills, three blocks and a season-best six aces along with Campo in that category.
The Red Hawks now turn their attention toward the postseason as MSU hosts Rutgers-Camden in the opening round of the 2011 NJAC Volleyball Tournament on Tuesday, November 1 at 7:00 pm. The winner advances to the semifinals slated for Thursday, November 3 at Richard Stockton in Pomona, NJ.
