Schoneveld Nets Overtime Winner in Win Over FDU-Florham

Madison, NJ (3/11/11) – Freshman KELLY SCHONEVELD (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) scored 68 seconds into overtime which turned out to be the game-winning goal as Montclair State evened its record on the season with a 12-11 victory over FDU-Florham at Shields Field on Friday afternoon.

Juniors MAGGIE FALLON (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic) and CORA DELFINI (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) each scored three times as the Red Hawks, who trailed by three goals in the second half and took the lead late before squaring their record at 2-2 with the overtime victory.

MSU fell behind 8-5 at halftime and trailed 10-7 with 21:58 remaining before shutting down the Devils attack for the next 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Montclair found its scoring punch as Schoneveld started a four-goal run with an unassisted tally at 10:16 of the period. Delfini cut the lead to 10-9 four minutes later and then tied the contest at 10-10 with 4:13 left with her third tally of the game.

Fallon would give the Red Hawks the lead with an unassisted goal with 2:39 remaining however FDU-Florham's Lindsey Parent scored with 1:12 left to force the extra period.

In the overtime, Delfini would win the draw and a foul by the Devils gave Schoneveld a free-position attempt a minute in. The freshman found the back of the net for the goal as Montclair took the lead for the first time in the game.

FDU-Florham had a chance to tie just over a minute later as Breana Kilpatrick was awarded a free-position attempt at 2:26 of the overtime. But goalkeeper TIFFANI HENDERSON (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) stopped the attempt preserving the lead for the Red Hawks. Neither team would get a shot off the rest of the way.

Henderson would finish with eight saves for Montclair, which was outshot in the game 22-20. Sophomore KAILEE BEAL (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) finished with two goals and eight draws while ALEX SCERBAK (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) had four draws.

The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, however the heavy rain storm forced the game to be postponed for a day.

The Red Hawks are now off until Saturday, March 19 when they open up Skyline Conference and New Jersey Athletic Conference play against Ramapo College at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm . The game will be a rematch of last year's Skyline Championship Game won by Montclair State, 17-6.
