Red Hawks Back to .500 Mark After Losses in Florida

Kissimmee, FL – The Montclair State softball team fell back to the .500 mark at 4-4 after a pair of losses to Farmingdale State and Springfield College at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday afternoon. Montclair lost to Farmingdale, 3-2 before suffering a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Springfield College.

Against Farmingdale State, the Red Hawks fell behind 3-0 after two innings before cutting that deficit in the top of the third with a run. LESLIE GONZALEZ (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) led off with a single and moved to second on a one-out error. DANA AMATO (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Valley) singled to load the bases and Gonzalez scored as KATIE MUGLIA (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) bounced into a fielder's choice to make the score 3-1.

MSU would miss a golden opportunity to put runs on the board in the fifth inning as Amato singled and Muglia doubled putting runners at second and third with no outs. But the next two hitters struck out and after a walk to load the bases, SHANNON MOZEK (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) lined out to short to end the inning.

That lost chance would turn out to be big as the Red Hawks Montclair threatened again in the top of the seventh. HEATHER BERGMAN (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) singled and an error put runners on first and second. Mozek singled to load the bases before Gonzalez lofted a sacrifice fly scoring Bergman as Montclair pulled within 3-2. MSU then had the tying run 60 feet away however the next hitter struck out to end the game.

Sophomore righthander JAMIE MILLER (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney) took the loss to fall to 1-2. Miller allowed six hits, three runs, struck out four and walked two.

Bergman, Amato and Gonzalez each had two hits for the Red Hawks.

Montclair would find itself in another early deficit against Springfield as the Pride scored twice in the second and added two more runs in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. MSU broke through in the bottom of the fifth as ALISHA CUMBERTON (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) singled and eventaully scored on an error to make the score 4-1.

Freshman righthander ALEX HILL (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills) suffered the loss as she fell to 3-2. Hill allowing four runs and 11 hits in six innings. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Cumberton was 2-for-3 for Montclair State.

The Red Hawks close out their Rebel Spring Games appearance on Friday, March 18 with games against Nazareth College and St. Benedict at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm, respectively.
