Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, NJ, Ramsey) recorded 23 kills, four aces and 11 digs as Montclair State split its first two matches at the Jay Street Classic held at NYU-Polytechnic on Friday evening.
The Red Hawks (4-8) snapped a seven-match losing streak as they swept Brooklyn College (25-11, 25-19 25-17) in the first match of the evening. MSU then fell to Farmingdale State in four sets. After winning the first set, 25-21, the Rams battled back 25-20, 25-18, 25-12 in the next three to take the match.
Against Brooklyn College, Salemo led the way with 12 kills and five digs.
Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ, Southern Regional) and
Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills) had four kills apiece while setter
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) collected 20 assists.
Megan Cockcroft (Rutherford, NJ, Rutherford)contributed five aces and six digs.
Salemo had 11 kills, three aces and six digs in the loss to Farmingdale State. Campo added 30 assists and five digs while libero
Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) had a team-best 17 digs. Batiste added six kills and
Alyssa Willis (Parsippany, NJ, Parsippany Hills) posted five kills.
MSU plays twice more in the Jay Street Classic on Saturday, September 17. The Red Hawks face York College (NY) at 11:00 am with a 1:00 pm match against host NYU-Polytechnic.
