Volleyball Drops Tough Five-Set Match with Rowan

– The Montclair State volleyball team dropped a tough five-set match with Rowan University on Tuesday evening at the RiverWinds Community Center.

The Red Hawks, who fell to 5-10 overall, 0-2 in the NJAC, lost the first set 25-17 but came back to take the next two 25-22, 25-19 for a 2-1 advantage. Rowan (5-1, 1-1 NJAC) tied the match with a 30-28 win in the fourth set and the Profs used the same two-point win in the decisive fifth set (17-15) to take the match.

The Profs were led by outside hitter/middle blocker Krissy Collins (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) with 14 kills and two service aces.  Outside hitter/middle blocker Dakota Oeskovic (so. Pine Beach, NJ/Toms River S.) added 13 kills and nine digs.  Outside hitter/middle blocker Sarah Hanrahan (fr. Montvale, NJ/Pascack Hills) tallied eight kills, 19 digs and three blocks.  Middle blocker Nikki Binetti (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) contributed with seven kills and four blocks.

For the Red Hawks, outside hitter Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, NJ, Ramsey) posted a match-high 18 kills and 16 digs.  Outside hitter Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ, Southern Regional) chipped in with 10 kills, 13 digs and five service aces.  Middle blocker Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills) collected nine kills and 21 digs.  Setter Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) dished 30 assists.  Libero Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) added 31 digs.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, September 22 as they host Rutgers-Camden at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 pm. Last season, MSU fell to the Scarlet Raptors twice, including a 3-0 decision in the opening round of the NJAC Tournament in Camden, NJ.
