Sierra Rauchbach (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) scored off a penalty corner 16:16 into the contest which turned out to the game's lone goal as second-ranked Montclair State edged seventh-ranked Christopher Newport 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship at Salisbury University on Saturday.
The Red Hawks set a new school record with their 20th victory of the season and more importantly put MSU one win away from reaching the national semifinals for the first time in school history. Montclair State will face 20th-ranked University of Rochester (17-5) at 1:00 pm on Sunday, November 11 with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Final Four at William Smith College in Geneva, NY next weekend.
Rauchbach collected her 11th goal of the season as the Red Hawks (20-1) cashed in on one of their eight penalty corners in the first half. Montclair would get three corner in the early going but couldn't get any shots off the opportunity. In fact, neither team could get any shots at all until 15:44 of the period when MSU's
Kate Norgard (Columbia, NJ, North Warren) was stopped by the Captains' Jamie Dowling.
MSU would get another chance 27 seconds later.
Jennifer Tafro (Little Falls, NJ, Passaic Valley) took the insert from Rauchbach off the corner that Dowling made a save one. Rauchbach tried to knock back in the rebound but she too was denied at first however the second carom was pushed in for the goal as Montclair State led 1-0.
Montclair would maintain that lead as they limited Christopher Newport (17-2) to just three shot in the opening 35 minutes, two of which were stopped by
Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ, Boonton).
In the second half, Montclair outshot the Captains, 11-5 but Dowling kept the game at a goal differential making five saves. Meanwhile Bosland stopped the only shot on goal by Christopher Newport.
Bosland, the NJAC Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded her ninth shutout and Montclair's 10
th this season.
