Harvey Collects 100th Career Win as Women's Basketball Races Past Salisbury, 79-53

Balanced Attack Leads Red Hawks to Title Game of Gwynedd-Mercy Tournament

Gwynedd Valley, PA – Montclair State head women's basketball coach Karin Harvey collected her 100th career victory as the Red Hawks got a balanced effort across the board in a 79-53 win over Salisbury in the Gwynedd-Mercy Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening.

Sophomore forward Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ, Roselle Catholic) led five players in double figures with 14 points as the Red Hawks (1-0) advanced to the championship game of the tournament and will face host Gwynedd-Mercy at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 17.

Harvey reached the century mark for her career which includes six seasons at Montclair State and one at Drew University. Her career record stands at 100-64. She also picked up her 87th win as a Red Hawks coach inching closer to becoming just the fourth coach in program history to record 100 wins.

The Red Hawks trailed 9-2 in the first three minutes of the game but spent the next 10 turning that deficit into a 15-point advantage with 7:32 to go in the first half.  Seven different players contributed in the 27-5 run which began on a basket by Janitza Aquino (Kearny, NJ, Kearny). Nicosia Henry (Bolingbrook, IL, Bolingbrook) later added six straight points, the last giving Montclair a 14-12 lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Shalette Brown (Somerset, NJ, Franklin Township) added six points in the run which was capped off by a three-pointer from Jen Kuczynski (Springfield, NJ, Jonathan Dayton) as Montclair State led 29-14.

Montclair State led 40-28 at halftime.

In the second half, Montclair State opened up with a 22-4 run to take its largest lead of the game at 62-23 with 11:02 to play as Brown connected twice from the free throw line. She finished with 12 points along with seven rebounds and three steals in her collegiate debut.

Aquino added 13 points and three assists while Taylor Jeffers (Franklin Township, NJ, Franklin) chipped in with 11 points, four rebounds and four steals. Sandra Gee (Allentown, PA, Emmaus) was the final Red Hawk in double figures with 11 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. Henry had eight points and five rebounds for MSU, which shot 55 percent in the first half and finished the game 30-of-62 from the field (48 percent), including 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Montclair also made 15-of-19 at the charity stripe.
