Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 6 Middlebury in NCAA Tournament Second Round, 12-5

Red Hawks' Season Ends at 14-6

Gettysburg, PA – The Montclair State women's lacrosse season came to a close on Saturday as the Red Hawks fell to sixth-ranked Middlebury College, 12-5 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship at Gettysburg College's Clark Field.

Sophomore Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) had two goals for the Red Hawks, who finished the season at 14-6, matching the second-highest season win total in program history.

Montclair State was making its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and third straight. MSU reached the second round by edging York (Pa.) 14-13 at home on Wednesday. It was only the second win in the NCAAs for Montclair.

Middlebury overpowered Montclair State, holding the Red Hawks to just one shot and forcing 17 turnovers in the opening period alone. The Panther offense was patient to start with Katie Ritter's tally standing as the only score for the first 12 minutes.

The offensive pace picked up as the team turned in six goals over the next 10 minutes. Margaret Souther tallied three in a row, including a man-up goal and a free-position goal to set the score at 7-0 with eight minutes remaining in the first period. Catherine Fowler and Emma Kramer lifted Middlebury to a 9-0 lead at the half with goals in the final 1:37.

Hannah Deoul gave the Panthers a 10-0 edge with the first goal of the final stanza, allowing the team to rest a number of starters for Sunday's finale. Montclair State scored four of the final five goals of the contest.

Middlebury held significant leads in shots (31-14) and ground balls (29-15) and forced the Red Hawks into 27 turnovers. Montclair State held the edge in draw controls at 12-7.

Souther and Emma Kramer each scored three times, while Ritter added two goals and one assist for the Panthers. Hannah Epstein paced the defense with three caused turnovers and Heather Marrison added two caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Senior goalie Lily Nguyen picked up four saves against three goals allowed.
 
Kailee Beal (Succasunna, NJ, Roxbury) added one goal and five draw controls for Montclair State as she finished with a season total of 110, smashing her single-season mark of 86 set last year. Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ, New Egypt), playing in her final game, had a goal and assist finishing her brilliant career with 197 goals and 267 points which ranked second and third, respectively all-time at MSU.

Junior goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ, Roxbury) made 10 saves.
