Men's Lacrosse Falters Against Union in First Round of NCAA Tournament, 12-5

Red Hawks Finish Season at 11-6 with Fourth Straight NCAA Appearance

Schenectady, NY – The Montclair State men's lacrosse team saw their 2012 season come to an end on Wednesday as the Red Hawks fell to No. 14 Union College, 12-5 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship at Frank Bailey Field.

Senior attack Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ, Ridge) had two goals and an assist as Montclair, making its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, had its 10-game winning streak snapped with the loss and finished the year at 11-6. MSU had not lost since falling to Stevens 15-7 at home on March 21.

Montclair reached the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Skyline Conference Championship on April 28 with a 17-10 win over Kean University.

The Dutchmen (12-4), ranked 16th in Division III in scoring defense, kept Montclair State off the scoreboard nearly the entire first quarter while picking up two goals as Jonathan Adnrews scored just before the midpoint of the period and Nate Greenberg followed with a goal at 9:14 as Union led 2-0.

Thomas Ring (Nutley, NJ, Nutley) would finally put the Red Hawks on the board late in the first period as he finished off a feed from Meth as Montclair trailed 2-1 after the first quarter.

Alex Stone quickly extended that lead for Union in the second as he won the opening faceoff, picked up the ground balls and scored seven seconds in as the Dutchmen led 3-1. It would be the start of what would become a nine-goal run by Union as Greenebrg scored twice in the second giving the hosts a 5-1 lead at the break.

In the third, Andrews' second goal began a six-goal quarter for Union as the Dutchmen widened their lead to 11-1.

Montclair State would be able to cut some of that deficit in the fourth. Kenneth Bogert (Brick, NJ, Brick Township) scored on an unassisted tally with 12:11 left and Meth followed with a man-up goal 26 seconds later to make the score 11-3. After a Union goal, Meth scored again on another man-up opportunity and MICHAEL SCHRECK scored inside four minutes remaining to make it 12-5.

But that would be as close as Montclair State would get.

MATT PRONGAY had two assists for Montclair State while defensemen Kiel Dietrich (Andover, NJ, Newton), Sean Gilmore (Elmwood Park, NJ, Bergen Catholic) and Mike Lade (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) each caused a pair of turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Mark Glander (Vernon, NJ, Vernon Township) made 10 saves and had a team-best eight ground balls.
