Montclair, NJ – Sophomore
Meghan Weiss (Allendale, NJ, Northern Highlands) and senior
Jennifer Tafro (Little Falls, NJ, Passaic Valley) each scored goals in the first half helping top-ranked Montclair State to a 4-0 victory over 20th-ranked Drew University at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Arielle Galgano (Cedar Run, NJ, Southern Regional) and
Brooke Hullings (Delran, NJ, Delran) each scored once as the Red Hawks won their third straight improving to 13-1. Montclair also posted its third straight win over the Rangers and they upped their record in the series to 18-13.
Senior goalkeeper CC Carlini (Amherst, NH / Bishop Guertin) made 12 saves for Drew (11-2).
MSU outshot the Rangers 25-7 in the contest, including 14-1 in the first half. However, Carlini made five saves through the first 30-plus minutes before the Red Hawks got on the board as Weiss punched in a pass from
Danielle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) on the left doorstep for her second of the season.
The Red Hawks would score again 77 seconds later as Tafro picked up her team-leading 15th goal of the year with
Stephanie Lewis (Garwood, NJ, Arthur L. Johnson) picking up the assist as Montclair took the 2-0 lead into halftime.
Galgano, the NJAC Rookie of the Week extended the lead to 3-0 just over a minute into the second period. Galgano flicked a shot in front that got past Carlini but was stopped by defender Alexandria De Sousa (Voorhees, NJ / Eastern). DeSousa knocked the ball back out however Galgano was right there stuffing in the putback for her fifth of the year.
Drew would get to chances with under 20 minutes remaining however sophomore goalkeeper
Rebecca Brattole (Clark, NJ, Arthur L. Johnson) stopped a pair shots from Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, NY / East Hampton) and Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, PA / Saucon Valley) keeping the game at 3-0.
Hullings got the final goal with 10:11 left.
Allison Jillions (Hainesport, NJ, Holy Cross) drove toward the cage and was denied twice by Carlini. Off the second save, the ball popped up in the air with Jillions alertly tapping the ball in midair over to Hullings who banged in the pass for her fifth tally of the year.
Brattole finished with four saves for MSU as she registered her fifth shutout of the season.
Both teams are in action on Saturday, October 19. Montclair State hosts No. 6 William Smith at Sprague Field beginning at Noon while the Rangers remain on the road taking on Goucher College in a Landmark Conference contest at 1:00 pm.
