Montclair, NJ – Sophomore
Trey Leggett (Stockton, NJ, Hunterdon Central) scored 1:27 into overtime lifting No. 8 Montclair State to a 1-0 victory over Kean University in an NJAC matchup of MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore
Lucas Terci (Union, NJ, Union) assisted on the game-winning goal as the Red Hawks (11-2-1, 3-1-2) won for the fourth time in their last five outings (4-0-1). Montclair also improved to 31-21-6 against the Cougars all-time, including the last 10 meetings and the second straight 1-0 overtime victory.
Senior goalkeeper Tyler Callahan (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) had six saves for the Cougars, who fell to 9-6-1, 0-5-1 in the NJAC.
Kean outshot the Red Hawks 15-12 through regulation with each team getting eight in the first 45 minutes. But neither side could get one into the back of the net as Callahan and freshman
Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic), the NJAC Rookie of the Week, each made four saves.
Gonzalez came up with a save in the 70th minute for MSU and Callahan denied Terci twice, the last coming with 22 seconds remaining in the second half.
In the overtime the Red Hawks wasted little time getting the game winner. A foul outside the box on the right side led to a free kick for Montclair State. Terci served the ball to the backpost where Leggett headed in the pass for the goal, his second of the season.
Gonzalez finished with five saves as he recorded his third consecutive shutout.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday, October 19 with NJAC contests. Montclair State is in Jersey City, NJ to face New Jersey City University at 2:00 pm. Kean is on the road in Ewing, NJ for an 11:00 am matchup with The College of New Jersey.
