Montclair, NJ – Junior
Jesse Shea (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) scored a pair of second-half goals while sophomore
Lucas Terci (Union, NJ, Union) collected a goal and two assists as Montclair State, ranked No. 7 by D3Soccer.com knocked off first-place Richard Stockton, 4-2 at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday evening.
Sophomore forward
Trey Leggett (Stockton, NJ, Hunterdon Central) added a goal and an assist for the Red Hawks (14-2-2), who improved to 5-1-2 in the league and remained in third place in the NJAC with the win. The Red Hawks are a point behind Richard Stockton and one-point ahead of Rutgers-Newark and The College of New Jersey in the league standings.
MSU will play at Ramapo on Wednesday, October 30 and with a win can clinch at least a first-round home match in the NJAC Tournament which gets underway on Saturday, November 2. Montclair can also get a first-round bye with a win on Wednesday and a loss by Stockton against Rutgers-Newark that evening.
Junior forward Matt Janne (Kinnelon, NJ /Kinnelon) scored both goals for the Ospreys (12-4-2, 6-2 NJAC), who had their five-match winning streak halted.
Montclair State outshot Stockton 9-4 in the first half and got two early chances that went high and wide. The Ospreys had one as well in the 13th minute as Clevon McPherson (Kingston, Jamaica / Pemberton) slipped behind the defense deep inside the box however his header went just wide.
The Red Hawks would get on the board at the midway point of the period on Terci's seventh goal of the season. Leggett served a ball from the left wing into the middle of the box where Terci went high in the air flicking a header for the goal and a 1-0 MSU lead.
That goal would stand the rest of the period and into the second when the Ospreys went on the offensive in the first five minutes and got the equalizer when Chris Katona (Howell, NJ / Howell) grounded a ball from the left side of the box to an oncoming Janne who one-timed the pass in to the back of the net knotting the match at the 50:55 mark.
Montclair State would regain the lead eight minutes later as Terci and Leggett combined again this time with Leggett getting the goal as he tapped in a feed from Terci for his fourth of the year for a 2-1 Red Hawks advantage. The lead grew to 3-1 at the 72:09 mark as Shea netted the first of his two tallies. Terci moved in along the right end line before firing a shot that Stockton keeper Bob Millar (Cream Ridge, NJ / Allentown) got a hand on. Fortunately for MSU the ball bounced right out to Shea who flipped the rebound into the open net for the goal.
Shea added his second at 72:09 taking a long feed from
Maxx Wurzburger (Glen Rock, NJ, Glen Rock) and moving in on Millar before firing a shot that clanked off the left post for a 4-1 lead.
Janne would answer for the Ospreys with 9:48 remaining with his second goal however the Ospreys did not get another shot the rest of the way.
Millar had five saves for Richard Stockton while MSU keeper
Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic) picked up his eight victory of the year.
