New York, NY – The Montclair State volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday as the Red Hawks downed host Hunter College in four sets before falling 3-0 to St. Mary's College (IN).
Freshman
Melissa Terpstra (Midland Park, NJ, Midland Park)and junior
Erika Gerner (Sparta, NJ, Sparta) each posted double-doubles as the Red Hawks (15-9) knocked off the Hawks 25-16, 25-23, 18-25, 25-13.
Terpstra had 16 kills and 10 digs as well as four aces while Gerner went for 14 kills and 10 digs. Freshman
Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) added a season-high 16 kills along with six total blocks. Senior libero
Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) had a team-best 19 digs with
Samantha Szura (Hewitt, NJ, Ramapo) registering 11 digs. Setter
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) had 50 assists and eight digs as Montclair State his .302 for the match, including the final set when it committed just two errors in 28 attempts.
The Red Hawks fell to St. Mary's 25-20, 25-12, 25-17.
Gerner,
Lauren Sharp (Mendham, NJ, West Morris-Mendham) and
Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) had three kills each for the Red Hawks. Campo had 15 assists and eight digs while Irwin posted 15 digs.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, October 30 hosting Centenary College at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 pm. It will be Senior Night for the Red Hawks who will honors their six seniors –
Megan Cockcroft (Rutherford, NJ, Rutherford),
Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills), Topor, Sharp,
Kimberly Butrico (Cresskill, NJ, Cresskill) and Irwin prior to the start of the match .
